LPN as Case Manager?

Specialties Case Management

Updated:   Published

Hello,

Just wondering if you can be a case manager if you are an LPN? Some friends say they know people who are doing it it NJ, but I can't believe everything I hear. Any input? Thanks in advance

Just wanted to add this lil tid bit:

Salaries for RN CMs (at least in NY) are pretty durn good. Depending on who employs you, the salary can go up to and over 90k, with the average being in the mid 70s to low 80s. Based on interviews and job offerings that I've received, salaries are increasing. A lot of hospital floor nurses find that they have to work the evening or night shift to push the salary up higher. In most cases, as a CM, you work Mon-Fri from 9a-5p with holidays and weekends off. In addition to working for insurance organizations, there are also opportunities in home care agencies, psych residential facilities and group homes.

If this is what you want to do, go for it. Again, be mindful that a clinical background will allow you to be much more successful in this position as well as have more confidence in your capabilities.

Best to you! :yeah:

Hello,

I'm sorry for not replying to anyone's messages. For some reason I was not notified by email.

Thank you to everyone for your advice.:flowersfo

Charna, I didn't realize the position paid so well. I am shocked and happy. I've been hearing around $17 per hour to start as an LPN and so I've been disappointed. What a difference in the salaries!! I would love to work 9-5 and have experiece working in offices for many years. I love to do administrative type work, I'm organized and it just comes natural to me. I am hearing though that you think I need to be getting my experience for a few years first. Does this mean I am doomed to make $17 per hour for a few years?? :crying2:

Any advice would be truly appreciated. BTW, we got snow in the morning, but not what I expected at all. Now it's just kind of slushy and yucky! Too bad I can't afford to live in California!!

Hey DSanto,

Without a doubt, I believe that clinical experience such as hospital nursing would definitely prepare you well for a position in case management. However, there are nurses that enter case management without any experience whatsoever. It's not the best way but it can be done.

Again, if it's what you want then go for it. I've never been one to travel a path just because others said I should. I create my own paths. Sometimes it works well for me, other times it doesn't but I've certainly learned a lot.

I am an LPN, with alot of hospital clinical experience, who is now a case manager (telephonic). I do work for a local HMO in the Madison, WI area and there are only 2 other RN's in my department. I love and the pay is way way way better than in the clincal setting. I did start with this company as a Healthcare Advocate (auth/deny requests for OOA care). Any one want my old job so I can move into my new one? LOL

Medical Case Management-I held this title and coordinated the program-as a LPN and in an out-patient setting. I received additional training to be able to learn and perform the social service aspect. It was a great, well-paid job but as a lot of these types of jobs go, it's very dependent on funding. It's great if it's available to you. Most times, it was just nursing with a more extensive social service component. 9-5, no weekends. Your weekends are free to earn extra money or just enjoy.

Hi...what state are you in?

I am actually a LPN Medicare case manager of a SNF facility in Louisiana. My job discription states that the required education is a registered nurse but I have done the position for almost 2 years. My DON does have to sign the MDS behind me but I do all the careplans also. I guess it differs state to state. I must say though, I am only paid 18.00 an hour, which definately is not enough. I am going to school for my RN, which Ill have in 3 months and my pay will go up to 27.00 an hour for the same exact responsibilities.

Wow big difference in pay! Only 3 months to go. Congratulations, you must be so excited. Good luck. :yelclap:

Hello, I work at a hospital in South Florida and I know of 2 Case Managers who are LPNs. They have been there for years and does outstanding work. They are a permanent fixture at that hospital. I don't know how much they make though. I bid you blessings on your new career!

:yeah:

Hello,

Just wondering...how much do the LPN's make at your hospital? Are you way south like Miami? I know the pay is probably less than here but so is the cost of living right? I know, everything is so expensive now it's so hard to judge. Just wondering because I will be looking to move somewhere sunny and warm. Thanks in advance.:onbch:
