LPN can work as a CNA ?

Published

I know an LPN can work as a CNA.

Do any LPN's do this? Do they need to keep up their CNA certificate, as well

as their LPN ?

Whether or not the LPN needs to keep up the CNA certificate depends upon the state. My state took away CNA certificates from licensed nurses back in 1994 or so. A licensed nurse in my state can not keep a CNA certificate once they get their nursing license. Not necessarily the way it goes in other states.

It depends on your state, as well as the policy and procedures of the facility in which you intend to work.

Be aware that, if there's a negative occurrence such as a sentinel event, some states will hold you to the higher level of licensure. In other words, you might have been working as a CNA on the night that the patient unexpectedly died, but some state BONs might uphold you to the level of your higher license. This is something to think about.
