LPN to ADN. help!!

I have two questions on transition from LPN to ADN.

1) if I transfer from and LPN to ADN, do I need to work as an LPN for a couple of years?

2) i read some threads that say LPN program is the first year of ADN. is this true for most program? is not the school are different, so the classes may be different?

Hi,

Some schools require that you work as a LPN before applying to their bridge class but many do not. I switched schools after getting my LPN and have found that I am up to speed with what they are teaching which was a big relief, lol. Good luck!

I would check with the school that you are planning on attending, because some schools have regulations on on how long you have to work before you can re-enter as a LPN to RN student. At the school that I attended, the LPN and RN students were together for the first year and then they separated after that. Again, it all depends on the school. If it is feasible to go straight into the RN program I would recommend that only because once you are in the program, you are used to the way that the program works and might have more success if you just finish it rather than take the break to work. Many of the LPNs that I went to school with stated that they would never return due to the difficulty of the program.

If that is their only concern I'd tell them to reconsider. I'm finding the RN program, while challenging, pretty manageable. Mostly I guess its because I'm in the groove and used to all the politics etc. that were so shocking to me when I first started LPN school, lol.

I think it depends on the school. My program required at least 1 year experience as an LPN, RT, or Paramedic unless you graduated within the past year. My program was an entirely separate class, but the program at another local comm. college, the LPNs transition students came into the 2nd year of the regular RN program. Ill bet the class dynamics were interesting...

Thats what we are doing and for the most part everyone has been very gracious about accepting us in their group. So far I've only had to squash one nasty LPN comment and the student that said isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer so I just considered the source, lol. It probably doesn't hurt that all the LPNs are doing really good so its not like we are being given anything. All in all I'm very happy.
