I am a RN working with an Agency. For the last 2 weeks I have been getting cancelled. They say it is always slow in the summer. Is anyone else having this problem. I work Baton Rouge/New Orleans. I am really thinking about travel nursing. Any advice would be helpful. A little background: I am a single mom with a 16 year old son, just purchased a home. So I am getting a little worried about work. Thanks.

If you plan to only work agency work, I suggest you work for more than one. That seems to increase your chances of working more and the ability to call someone else when you are cancelled. AL

Maybe you could consider going PRN with a hospital or two. but I would definitely consider working for more than one agency. I am going to work for an agency, but I'll probably also have other gigs on the side since its not guaranteed.

Could anyone share with me the average salary of an agency nurse compared to a floor nurse at a hospital?
On average a staff nurse in a hospital makes about $17-$22 per hour. Agency nurses make about $30 and above. AL:)

There are some military contracts I saw. They hire both LPN's and RN's.
I am fixing to become a traveler.
BTW everyones getting cancelled. Its too hot here in La.Thankfully it rained today a little but by the afternoon it was back in the nineties. They are calling for us to reduce our thermostats to avoid blackouts
My advice would be to sign up PRN/Pool for a local hospital, the rates are good and you still remain flexible, and you have a better chance of keeping work available. Keep agency work as a side job. The problem with just working agency right now is most hospitals have started their own pools which are just as flexible as an agency and pay about the same. AL

LPN OUT OF LAKE CHARLES, LA. IF YOU WORK FOR PROF. STAFFING RUN FOR YOUR LIFE:uhoh3: SHE IS CRAZY. IF I WASN'T BEING CANCELLED EVERY TIME, I WAS CANCELLED THEN CALLED BACK AN HOUR LATER TO COME IN AT A LATER TIME AND I WOULD SHOW UP EARLY THINKING I WAS HELPING THEM OUT AND THEY WOULD BE LIKE WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? JUST VENTING:chuckle !!!! I WOULD STAY HERE UNTIL YOUR SON FINISHES SCHOOL, WORK PRN/FLOAT POOL AT A HOSPITAL THEN MAYBE WHEN YOU TRAVEL HE CAN COME WITH YOU AND BE ABLE TO SEE DIFFERENT INTERESTING PLACES....LONGWINDED

I work a weekend special for my hospital and do agency during the week days. Do sign up with more than one agency. Lately if the don't cancel me, they send me home early. Have you considered a contract at one of theses hospitals? They can't cancel contract agency.

Hi, hospital census does tend to drop slightly, in certain areas, during the summer months. Also, take into consideration, this is the time most May grads are coming out of orientation. I've been doing strickly agency for 3yrs now and LOVE it!!! Ask your agency for a contract, if they don't have any available to fit your profile call around to other agencies. The work is there, and with a contract you are guaranteed your hours and you have a schedule. Hope this helps:nurse:
