Lots of people changing their minds last minute

Leave it to the local news channel to change the minds of future nursing students. They run a short snippet talking about how so many people ran to the nursing field for jobs when the economy started doing downhill and now say there are way too many out there. So now many students who were going to go for nursing are changing their minds...more room for me!! lol

Hmmm... too bad many people don't know this. All I hear during class is "Oh we'll get jobs so quickly... blah blah blah shortage.... blah blah blah." Even two of my professors (micro and sociology) who have mentioned nursing seem to think there is still a shortage.

People need to do their own research before they pick a career. I hear a lot of fields in allied health are saturated too. I decided if I dont get into a nursing program for next fall that I'm going to get a degree in public health.

Although I don't usually respond, I do read through the comments made. What the baby boomers on here have said is, whether they like it or not, they will eventually retire. Opening up jobs for many of the new grads. Of course time will tell when that will happen. Nonetheless, me and all of us in here are still pursing that degree.

Currently, networking is a big key in landing that job. Am I worried about getting a job when I graduate from NS? Nope, because all the new nursing grads by me have a connection. Unemployed nurses are non-existent in my network. ;)

networking as in interships/externships? can just knowing a nurse at a hospital get you a job?

What others have suggested is familiarizing yourself with nursing managers. Some had success with just knowing a few nurses.

My connection is a professor in the Health Sciences department at the CC. That professor has connections to many people at clinics, hospitals, and other health care facilities. Your "network" can help.

If your communication skills are lacking, this is the time to brush up on them.
