Lost in the Cyber clinic

Specializes in Emergency Department, Information System.

Nurse informatics is the field I believe I belong in. I need to find "the right place at the right time" that I have read about in the posting by our colleagues unfortunately I need to find it "right now". I have searched a number of job sites and I am just not having the results I am looking for. Does anyone know of a place on the web that might have job posting for this field?

Specializes in Informatics, Education, and Oncology.

The traditional sites such as Careerbuilders.com and Monster.com have Nursing Informatics position postings but the titles may be listed under different names such as: Clinical Analyst, HIS Analyst, Project Manager, Trainer, Database Admin, etc. It all depends on what skills you have and what exactly you want to do in Informatics.

Also check out the job posting sections of AMIA, ANIA and HIMSS.

Nursing Spectrum on-line also now has a "Nursing Informatics" section to search under. Good Luck!

Hi rninformatics,

Thank you for your words of guidance. I notice you are "Board certified Informatics". How did you earn the ability to become Certified? I am in what I see as a unique situation but, I have to believe that others are where I am in my careers. I have 10 years clinical experience and 9 years of Telecommunications experience woorking with databases. Now, I want to help improve my original work environment by the implementation of technology with workflow process in mind. Unfortunately, I meet more brickwalls than windows. I will of course keep looking at the bricks to see if I can create my own window--Spectrum will be my next stop.

Again thanks,

Hello RNHarley,

Ah yes I too know about hitting those "brick walls". Been there, done that. Don't be discouraged, in fact be encouraged as those brick walls only made my head harder!

After practicing in Informatics for several years I was eligible to sit for the Certification Exam administered by ANA-ANCC. Detailes about the Informatics Certification can be found on ANA- NCC's web site.

Hello RNinformatics,

I am in the process of deciding to attend Grad School and would be interested in getting your opinion of a program I think would fit my goals, but I don't know if I can post the name of the school. The program is a Masters in Information Systems Management with a Healthcare Information concentration. I am an ASN with a BS in Electronics and do not feel the need to chase down the BSN/MSN path to validate 10 yrs clinical experience in a career path that would not be in direct patient care. What is your feeling on this?

Hello RNHarley,

Congratulations on your decision to enroll in grad school. It sounds like you have been doing your home work related to which program will meet your unique, individual needs. I agree with you that if your future focus will not be in direct hands on care or traditional clinical practice (nor do you intend to teach Nursing - for which you would need a minimum of a MSN) that this degree sounds like what you are looking for. I'm sure you also have taken a detailed look at the course content and it meets your needs related to what you want to do in Informatics now and potentially in the future????

Do you feel comfortable that this particular degree can only add to your marketability??? If "Yes" to all the above - GO FOR IT!

Good Luck!- its so good to see someone who has done his/her homework!

Hello rninformatics,

Sorry I left the thread hanging but, as an update. I actually made the leap of faith into my Masters Degree in information Systemes Management with a concentration in health care. I am taking courses on line and so far the course descriptions and content either meets of supasses the depth that the MSN Informatics would take. I am really looking forward to the integration of my talents.
