Looking professional all day long . . .

Published

Hello Nurses, nursing students, pre-nurses, and everyone else,

I am having problems with my hair recently. It looks fine when I leave, but by the end of the day, it looks like I went through a tornado. Okay not literally, but it is pretty bad. I was wondering if you have any problems controlling your hair? What do you do to keep it professional looking all day? Do you spend hours on it before work? I am always fond of the tried and true pony tail.

This is a pretty silly thread, but I find we need a horse of a different color lol.

I have longer blonde hair... some days I wet just the scalp part and brush it back into a pony tail.. and then secure with bobby pins and hairspray. Other days I will straighten it and put it back in a pony but with the shorter pieces and my bangs out on either side.

I find if anything my makeup starts looking messy by the end of the day... but I look 12 years old without any makeup on :)

Takes 2-5 minutes when you get used to it (doesn't take long) and lasts >24 hours no matter how hectic your day is.

ive heard of this!!! i am using makeup forever hd foundation right now. seems they are the only ones that make a foundation pale enough for my skin :) but airbrush makeup isnt really in my price range at the moment... i just hashed out 3 grand for tuition again this semester. yay.

thanks for the tips though. i have a job lined up for when i grad... so maybe ill spend my first paycheck on that :D

I hear ya! I started my first RN job at the beginning of November and Dinair was my birthday present to myself in December.

That's weird...I also used MUFE HD Foundation before Dinair for the exact same reason. I'm pretty much as white as the screen lol. I still use my HD finishing powder with Dinair, but it sets on contact so you really don't need it. Force of habit I guess.

It's kind of surprising, but it's actually quite a bit cheaper than MUFE because you use less than 10 drops each time. You'll notice a big drop in the $ you spend on foundation.

Like a previous poster, I have baby fine and pin straight hair and it looks greasy within hours from sweating and whatnot. I take a little bottle of dry shampoo spray with me and use it on my lunch break to revive my hair. Just spray it on and go!

This is my favourite: http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P193725&categoryId=B70 in the small size.

I get a haircut and color every 6 weeks and a Brazilian blow out every 12. I find that regular maintainence is key.

I've been very interested in the Brazilian keratin treatment. Ive heard it works miracles. All of my instructors talk about it but I was reading that it is carcinogenic. Have you heard about that? Do they make you wear a mask so as not to inhale the fumes? I'd love to do it but I dont know about the risk. They say it cuts drying time in half.

I have the same hair type as you, and have had a huge problem with this as well. I have noticed that If I let my hair dry naturally, then straighten it and put it up in a ponytail that it looks much better. This minimizes the stray strands that like to come out, and I do not look completely unprofessional. I am not sure it is the healthiest thing for my hair to straighten it this way, but it is the only thing that works for me without making my hair look greasy halfway through the day.

Hikernurse- you put your hair in pony tail or "wind" it up and just screw them in : ) Sounds weird but it works. And I have superthick, curly below the shoulder hair. I usually just use a band and then wind up and clip, but these are good for something different.

Haha, love this post.. My hair is the most unprofessional but my co- workers and my pts love it.. My hair is short in the back and long in the front. It looks great going out etc but not nurse friendly. My head is shaped funny so headbands don't stay on nor do the clothe ones.. So my fix is sunglasses on top of my head, it keeps the hair back all shift with no problems :)

They allow you to wear sunglasses??? Not only that, they actually STAY on your head, the ENTIRE shift??? Man, you're good! :yeah:

This is awesome!! I had no idea so many people were cursed with hair not so perfect. I have been out tonight already looking for the spiral bobby-pins from goody. I am quite excited to try them.

I did also look for dry shampoo, I have not found it yet, but yikes, it may be heaven sent.

I agree with ChicagoRNtoBSN , Sun0408, you are lucky to have your glasses stay on hahaha. Although if I did that it would look weird. Glasses on the face and head . . . . LOL

You are all AWESOME!!! I look forward to hearing about the curses to come.

I have also opened up separate links to the makeup sites. My makeup is usually worse than my hair . . I may see my epiphany!

Its funny but yes they do... They are not huge so you can barely see them plus they are the color of my hair almost so they blend in.. As for management, yep they don't have an issue.. In a way, it is just like a headband :) I have had MD's ask and once I explain, they laugh.

I have thick, straight/wavy hair....and I love my flyaways! If I wet them down they turn into lovely little corkscrew curls, the only time I have actual curls instead of just an involuntary "flip". So I wear a ponytail then wet my flyaways down and have little ringlets LOL
