Looking for a Pre-Nursing buddies

Published

Greetings,

I am a SAHM of two and a future nurse. I am relatively new to Columbus,Indiana (moved from Michigan last August). Since August I have waited patiently for the powers at be to bless a girl with residency .

I am about to start my second try at finishing pre-reqs. In Michigan I finished all prereqs but one. Then Hubby got a job out of state. Therefore, I had to take about 5 steps backwards  within the Indiana collegic system. Unfortunately I have to repeat A&P and Micro :banghead: .

In the Fall, I will be attending IUPUC. I have to complete 5 pre-reqs (including A&P) . Fall semester I plan on taking three classes (COMM, SOC, and MATH). Then in the Spring, I plan to take A&P, and SWKs. My target date for sending my application to the School of Nursing is Spring '07.

However, I feel like the rug has been pulled from under me with the upcoming change in admissions standards. It appears as if I will need at least one additional class ,( NURS 104) that is only offered in Indianapolis or Bloomington ( which are both and hour drive one-way from my home):o . My Hubby suggested that I just do a super load this semester and take all five of the classes that I need. I had to give him the look :angryfire .

I am looking for fellow pre-nursing student to laugh, cry, whine, and moan with, count down application dates with, and scream about incompetent professors with.

Sincerely,

BouBou

Bou bou...I'm waiting to see if I was accepted, and would be more than happy to lend an ear. I will say this, your husband is right. Get it over and done with, that way should anything else come up in the next year of your life it doesn't throw the whole plan off. Just my thoughts, I wish you great luck and lots of success!

Hi! :)

I am a SAHM of a 2yo and a 5yo. The 2yo has special needs but is getting better all the time. I am homeschooling the 5yo. Just decided to take a step towards nursing and enroll in a class in the fall. Yipee! I have a degree already but need some classes still. It will probably take me at least 2.5 years to complete the pre-req's, one at a time. My children are first right now and will only be little once. My first class is Chemistry. I am studying Algebra this summer on my own to test out of it in the fall. I already took that class in college but it was over 10 years ago so they want me to take it again or test out of it.

I need Chem, Bio (unless I can test out of it-- already took it once), Micro, and A&P 1 and 2, plus one class I can take while waiting for my letter.

Good luck! I would just take the class you need now and get it over with. Do they offer it as a summer course? Maybe do it then if you think it's too much right now. It will feel so good to get it behind you and move on.

Good luck in your decision, Bou Bou.....I am from that area where you live now. I grew up on Lake Michigan close to Michigan City. Are you working outside of the home? If not and you think you can handle it, go for it. I am taking 1 class this summer and that is more than enough for me.

Thanks for all the responses!

Well, last night I decided to call my Momma and get her opinoin of doing a super semster. She was completely against it. She thought I might be setting myself up for failure and misery. I agree totally. I think I 'll just take it easy and finish the pre-reqs in two semesters.

One of my children also has special needs. He attends a special education preschool through our local school system four mornings a week. The school also provides specialed therapies for him twice a week (speech and occupational). I also have a previous degree but many of my science classes have expired. I don't have to take many pre-reqs, but there are just enough to make me sweat.

Before moving to Indiana I lived in the Detroit, Michigan area. Honestly I hated it then, but I miss it now.

BouBou,

I know how you feel about moving and the pre-req's are different. I started my nursing program in Arkansas, and now I live in Oregon. I work full time, and my husband won't make enough money so I can quit working until November of 2007. I won't be able to apply to the nursing program until January of 2008 for the fall term. I too feel frustrated and think I may have taken several steps backward, but what keeps me going is the thought that at the end of this hard and frustrating journey will be a wonderful career as a nurse. (yes, I do know it is a tough and trying profession, but that's what we love about it right???)

Good Luck, and I agree with Mom....super semester = unnecessary stress and pressure with possible failure if the slightest thing goes wrong (i.e. sick kids or...LIFE);)
