Nursing Students SRNA

Published

Hey everyone!

I shadowed a CRNA recently and LOVED IT! I am set on pursuing this now and would like to hear from those with experience in applying, esp to Univ of MD. I have a 3.9 GPA, 3.8 nursing school GPA, I've only ever worked in the MICU at an urban teaching hospital (level 1 trauma center) for 2.5 years. I'm going to apply for a promotion to be a senior on my floor to show leadership. I was torn between doing that or going to a CSICU/CVICU. I've gotten involved in several projects and plan to do more. I've precepted a few nurses. I'm orienting to charge now. I have my CCRN and passed with flying colors, 91% on cardiac, 100% in multi organ systems. I'd really love any feedback or suggestions as I'm sure all of the applicants look just like me.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

You sound like a fine candidate. I see no reason to change the unit in which you work, unless you don't like it, and want to change. 3-4 years (by the time you start) will be more than enough. A big MICU in a University Hospital is more than enough to teach you lines, drips, vents, and multiple systems. Overall, if your bio above is accurate, you will have no difficulty getting into whatever program you want.

Hey Big Pappa CRNA, thanks for the confidence boost! I'm thinking I may apply sooner than my 5 year mark. So many of the nurses on my floor have not gotten in despite being very strong ICU nurses. Then again, i don't know any of their other credentials.

Specializes in Anesthesia.

I got in with just MICU experience and a lesser GPA. You'll be fine.

Nice! And congrats. What school?
