Specialties Operating Room

Published

I am looking for hospitals anywhere in the country that have new grad with no experience openings in OR.

Long specialty training is that what interests me the most.

Thanks,

I.

I am also extremely interested in the OR so I found work as a tech in a hospital that has a new grad OR program. If you prove yourself, and impress your manager she will give you a great reference and that might just be your "in" that you need. I work in a cardiovascular unit for post angio's and other heart issues. Most managers know each other pretty well and sometimes it's all in who you know! Good luck!

Thanks, I'm looking into that.

Yes, looked into AORN web site (I am a member). Pretty much everybody requires experience, but I was able to find (very few) places.

If you are willing to move to Dallas, Texas, Baylor University Medical Center has a 6 month long perioperative internship followed by an orientation to the specialty that you are placed in (they take into consideration your area of interest, but are also driven by need).

Those specialites are General, CV, Neuro, Ortho, Gyn, Plastic. As RNs we are trained to scrub and circulate.

I believe the candidates for the June intern class have already been selected, I would start inquiring and applying in late September or early October if you are interested in the December class.

The number of people they take depend on the need. My internship class had 6, the following class had 10. I believe this semester, there are 4.

Good luck!

Thanks, I will check them out.

Wake University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC. We accept new grads, 28 week orientation with interviews going on now for our 2009 July class.

Somehow I missed that, I applied for Wakemed in Raleigh area. I'll check again.

I started in the OR in Oct of last year with a small group (4 of us).

The group ahead of me there were about 4 GNs and they are striving.

And my friend just got hired in another OR so I honestly don't believe it is only because of the 'market'.

If how you responded in this forum is in any way how you reply to either the recruiter/interviewer then you will definitely NOT get the position.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Information that somebody else got a job does not really do anything for me, but if you could specify the hospital, or at least the area, that would be some kind of help.

I was trying to be very polite, even though I was treated as a complete moron in couple of posts. Maybe because I am foreign and a male?

I thanked everybody for help and followed leads. Good leads and ideas was what I was looking for when coming to this OR forum.

Advice such as "just send resumes to everybody" is not really helpful. I haven't seen a hospital in the US that would not require sending an application online. In addition, any person who is able to complete an RN program is typically quite intelligent and knows about an invention of a resume. In my RN school, we had special career classess on resume writing and interviewing. In fact, I already interviewed for jobs. It has been my experience that sending a specific resume, to a specific place, and following up is one of the best ways to get an interview.

Respectfully,

Ilya

It is a very good idea.

Unfortunately, I just finished my RN education, and in this situation no hospital would hire me below and RN position (I checked). There could be an exemption to that rule in couple of hospitals somewhere in the country, but it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Thanks again,

Ilya

Yale New Haven Hospital has a peri operative program, they take new grads, and its about 9 months to a year long. Good Luck!!!

Already applied, thanks for the lead.

Specializes in 2 years school nurse, 15 in the OR!.

Have you looked at Houston? We have the Medical Center and I know that Methodist Hospital, Hermann Hospital, Texas Childrens, and a lot of the Hermann network offer Periop 101 the internship for the OR. I'm sure St. Luke's does as well. Good Luck.
