a long road to nursing school

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Several months ago I applied to nursing school. I had a goodGPA, I had done everything that my advisors told me, and I was shocked and totallycrushed when I did not get into the one and only program I had applied to.Letters of acceptance went out in April, and I did not even make the waitinglist. My letter read at least how my poor crushed soul saw it was" thanks forapplying, but you suck." All around me people were getting into the programwith much lower GPAs so I knew I was competitive. I sent a letter to me advisorand asked what happened. I was basically told, that because I did not complete 15credit hours at the school, I was put at the bottom of the list, as theyaccepted their students first (regardless of GPA as long as it was 3.0 orhigher) followed by students with a previous degree, regardless of what thatdegree was in as long as their GPA was 3.0 or higher. I was so upset, as I hadasked over and over again how much did it count to complete 15 hours at theuniversity (I asked this when I could have easily taken over 15 hours at theuniversity) and was told hardly anything at all...it's not enough for you toworry about, well apparently it was.

I went into all of this so you could see where I was, and soyou could now see where I am. I just finished my first day of nursing school.Yep, that is right! The very school that put me at the bottom of their list becauseI had not completed enough hours at their school, called me on Monday andinformed me that I was next on the list. Apparently, not everyone on the waitlist had taken their CNA certification, so they had to start calling the onesnot on the list...hence how I got in (I thought that having your CNA wasmandatory for you to apply for the program, but I guess not)

The main reason I am writing this is to tell everyone outthere, NEVER give up!!! Even if you are turned down there is still a chance! Iam living proof of that...

Congrats on getting into nursing school. It was a journey for me as well. I had to be patient, relentless, and determined. and I went from CNA to LPN to ADN (RN). I may go back for BSN we will see. Anyway good luck on your nursing journey. There will definitely be days when you question your sanity and why would anyone go through this, but in the end it will all be worth it. Just think of it as basic training or boot camp. Also make sure school is your priority and that you have a good support network. You can do this.

It's crazy how some schools are like that...it's understandable but at the same time, if someone transferred in from another school just to apply to the program & has met all the requirements then that person should be fair game just like everyone else! I'm sorry this has happened to you! The BSN program I just applied to is new to me as well. I've never attended there but have completed all the pre reqs, with the exception of the upcoming fall sem. I did think that I'd be last to be considered, but the schools nursing advisor has met with me several times & suggested I take all my pre reqs at the local CC where I've been at, to save $ then apply to their school then the program. Everyone's fair game

Congrats!!! I'm glad you hung in there until you were accepted into the program...You can do it!!!

Thanks every one! I could not be happier. I really just wanted to put out there that it really does happen, and hold the faith!!!

Clearly I didn't read your entire post the first time..congrats on getting accepted!!! Where I live, 2 universities both share the same nursing program. You'd still graduate and apply to one or the other, but classes & clinicals are on the same medical campus of one of the universities. Ok, so both schools calculate GPAs way differently than each other. Basically one of the 2 schools is harder to get into because they don't allow repeats...well I'm the queen of repeats lol. I was told by one of the advisors that there's no way I'll get accepted into the nursing program, because of my poor grades in the past from my CC. I ended up applying to the same program through the other school...my cum GPA to them is a 3.47...to the other school with the same program sees a 2.8. See the crazy difference? Based on the past 3 years, the lowest gpa to get accepted is around a 3.34. I'd love to get in & prove that one advisor wrong!!! She made me believe I'm not good enough for nursing...well when I was told to retake all my poor grade classes, I busted my butt & aced them all so I feel like I def have the drive & dedication!!

This is so inspiring! I too will be in somewhat of the same situation next year when I apply to a few different nursing programs at different schools, good to know what to look out for and that patience really does pay off! Good luck!

That's right! Never take no for an answer, stay enrolled, keep taking pre reqs and co reqs even as you get rejected! I was rejected twice, but kept at it, until I brought my GPA up to a 4.0 and had taken all co reqs and they finally said, Hey, let's give this old gal a chance! She's got chutzpah! Now at 49, I start the RN program in August. Congrats to you!

Do you know of anyone that got accepted or in school with you with gpa lower than a 3.0? Thanks !!

Congrats!!!! Really inspiring!!!! :-)
