I applied to Lone Star - ADN program Spring 2012. I was accepted as an alternate. I am hoping to get a call from the nursing department saying there is a spot for me. If not I will be reapplying for the next application period for entrance to the program in the Fall 2012. Good luck everyone!!!!

I graduate in 2 weeks from north harris, and we started with like 135 (including transitions) and have 68 left...things have changed alot and the lower level students have it easssssyyyy. Not sure why they are becoming more relaxed though. Very few of them have failed out, and they are getting tons of extra points on exams that they don't do well on or taking the hardest exams in groups lol...not sure if they are going to do that with the students who come in behind them...when the group behind me takes exit hesi, they don't even have to pass it with an 850 to graduate like we do..it just counts as their final I believe so things are changing, not sure if it's for the better or not...good luck to all you who got in!!!

i'm finishing up nursing 2 now at nh and we have been told that we will also have to score at least an 850 on the exit hesi in nursing 4 before graduation. not all schools require an exit hesi, such as the bsn at ut, but lsc does. yes, extra points have been given on some exams, but most of those have been due to miskey inputs etc. and several of the it problems they have had concerning school computers and compatible software etc this year. i'm sure many in my class would disagree that it has been easy by any means, because that is simply untrue and rather unfair for you to say. :(

i hope all of the new admits don't read to much into your post and feel further intimated by the fact that so many in your class have failed. not everyone that leaves the program because of failure. i personally know 4 that did fail, but many others withdraw for a variety of different reasons. one of our classmates was diagnosed with cancer, some get pregnant or deliver babies and choose not to continue because of the added stress it adds to their lives. we got a few new students tht joined us this semester and one that i met, told me she had to quit after nursing 1, 2 years ago because her husband was terminally ill. i can't imagine enduring such a tragedy and returning to nursing school afterwards, but she did, what an amazing woman she must be and an equally amazing nurse she will be.:loveya:

nursing school is difficult and although you will hear many horror stories, there are many more success stories and entering the program with a positive can do attitude it the best prescription in the world for success :o:yeah::nurse:

Do you know of anyone who was working part-time during the program while still managing to be successful? While planning my budget recently, I have encountered a problem with my savings. I have enough money right now to pay rent and bills, plus books and tuition until the summer between Nursing I and II, but sometime during that summer I will need to get a part time job. Do you think it is possible to be successful in the program and work no more than 20 hours a week? Are there students who are working part-time?

Absolutely!! I know many people who work part time because they need the money to make ends meet and it is very doable. Many of those also have children and balance school, family and jobs. It's a challenge but it can be done. The main thing it takes to get through any of this is WILL. You constantly say to yourself, "I will do this no matter what". You will also meet and make new friends and often you will have those things in common and you all support each other, so you have someone who understands what your going through because your all going through it together:uhoh3::D

Kalisefer, my MIL works part time...she did the summer program at NH between her first and secobd year and became an LVN and works 12 days a week at a nursing home. I have no clue how her grades are, but she graduating in a couple weeks so she's survived, at the very least!

nursing school is hard in general, maybe i should've said easier?! anyways, yes lots of people drop out for other reasons, but we lost sooo many people simply b/c they made it sooo difficult. maybe they are realizing it's un-neccesary to be that tough lol? anyways, i wish you all the best of luck! i've learned a ton at nh as i'm sure you all will as well! and i dunno bout the hesi thing, that's what was said by the director after we took our exit hesi, if not your class then maybe the next?

please share any information on topics that we could study over the summer so we can be somewhat prepared for the first semester. i have two children 8 and 4 and i know that i will have my hands full while i am in nursing school. any help or advise will be helpful and greatly appreciated!

Hi there!

I'm almost done with my first semester at Cy-Fair and would like to share some information with you or answer any questions you may have!

For those of you who were accepted to Cy-Fair I would advise to be prepared to read A LOT during the semester and make sure to complete all the reading assignments you'll get at orientation before the first day of class.

First semester you won't have any clinicals but you'll have Nursing Skills I and II. Take these classes seriously and always read the chapters before class because the two days you'll be in lab practicing are considered "clinical days"... you won't have time to read there but just to practice with the mannequins.

If you're not so good at Math then you could start studying and getting prepared for the math exam. This semester the book we used was Dosage and Calculations by Pickar, 8th edition, but I don't know if you'll be using the same one since I believe there is a new edition. I'm pretty sure any Dosage and Calculations book would help you to get ready for the math exam before you get the list of books for next semester.

Wow that is so interesting how different the Cyfair program is from ours. I know it's a block learning system, but I didn't realize that you didn't have any clinicals the 1st semester. I wish NH or Montgomery would begin a Spring start program like Cyfair and KW do. Good luck with your next semester:)

Thanks for your reply! I know that school is going to be stressful. I do not need my finances stressing me out as well. I am a divorced mom with three children. I have been divorced long enough that I can handle things on my own, but stressing over finances seems to be the toughest when there is only one income in your household.

Thank you for the information! Are there any topics that you covered that you think will be beneficial to us newbies to study over the summer before class starts? Does your classes usually end on time or do you have to stay later sometimes? Are there any supplies that we will need to buy in advance? How are the professors for the 1st semester, I noticed that there were only a select few that taught the same classes? Is it true that we will only have 6 credits for the 1st semester? How is the online medical ethics class, do you have A LOT of assignments?

Sorry for all the questions...... I am so nervous!!! :eek:
