I have always wanted to be a RN but did not have enough faith in myself, because of the poor grades I had in high school. Well now I feel ready to take a chance. So I went to my local community college just to take my placement tests. I found out that I scored so low on my math that I would have to take a non credit course. (how embarrassing) :imbar Well I guess Im going to have to start somewhere.

Hey Wanna
Don't be discouraged. Didja know that Einstein was thought to be 'slow' when he was in grammer school? Many many folks had difficulties in HighSchool and went to to achieve all their dreams! I'm one. Just barely managed to graduate from HighSchool. Couldn't get into college. Grew up a lot in 4yrs of AirForce. Managed to stay on 'dean's list' through college and later through nursing school because I'd learned the lessons of diligence and organization while growing older.
There's no end to 2d chances--unless you yourself don't take them!

PS--You'll find that the vast majority of Nurses can't do much math. I say:
"There's no such thing a NursingMath. It's like the unicorn--we know what they look like and act like and where they're likely to be found, but they don't exist. We just ask the pharmacist!"

I was a total idiot for math in HS. My placement test results were ridiculous. I had to take 2 remedial classes. Finished that and finished college algebra this summer. Don't worry about it. If your math skills are a bit rusty it will be a good opportunity for you to brush up on some concepts. Good luck, you can do it! :)

Hey you are right where I was about a year ago. After thirteen years out of high school I was a mess at math. In fact I have never been so scared of a class, but as someone else said, by the time it comes around again its not as bad because you have developed the study skills and you have the determination. I had to start with pre-algebra and then algebra. In fact, it took a year of classes that don't evan count as prerequisites, don't worry, I know you can do it. Your not in this alone!!!!
Thanks for the words of encouragment :) :) :)

No, don't be discouraged. There are so many in my school who start at elementary math! Math is not my strong point either and it is better to start where you places (no matter how low) so that you can get it right. I placed in Algebra, and am glad I did because I learned so much that I am more confident in myself. Good luck to you. :)

I acctually know very few people who got placements into college level math courses. I could probably count them on one hand.
I liked to think of myself as a math whiz in high school. I could barely do any work in class and pull A's on test.... I got put in one of the non credit classes.
If you think that the test score was low, and it wasn't because of your skills. Check out your schools retesting policies and try hitting a few math review sites and relearning, refreshing your math skills and retaking the test.

After 10 years of working as an RPN/LPN, I decided to go back to and school and become an RN. To make a long story short, after a lengthy conversation with one of the college instructors, I was told I would have to take a math course designed for health practioners (I HATED math in high school), and chemistry (too much like math in high school). Although I was not thrilled about taking the math course, in the long run, it proved to be very beneficial throughout the nursing program, in fact I did extremely well with the math course. In high school, the classes I enjoyed, I excelled in (biology, english, history mainly), and those I didn't care for I did poorly or medicore. Oh yea, mom was a teacher who LOVED math and is a whiz at it (actually stepmother, no math genes for me).
My point is, don't feel embarrassed. I did what I had to in order to get into the nursing program, and you can to. You may actually surprise yourself at how smart you are.
Bye the way I still suck with computers!!

My younger sister had to tutor me in math in hs. When I had to take the LPN placement test she again had to tutor me in basic algebra. We're taking nursing math right now in school and everyone is absolutely freaked out. Don't beat yourself up, I think a lot of us out there go through the same thing.
