Hello all, I had a couple of questions and would appretiate it if anyone can help me out. I have an offer to work in a large hospital on a inpatient floor working with oncology patients. I am a new grad LVN and think this is a great opportunity but I have no desire to work with these type of patients. What I really would like to do is work in the ER or pediatrics. I learned recently that there are some openings in the ER and really want to apply there but problem is I accepted the other position because the nurse manager offered it to me on the spot and I just reacted by saying yes. What should I do? I can transfer in 6 months but the recruiter is already going crazy with people transferring cuz they agree to a position that they did not really want. I have not started any paperwork with the other unit but have to get going on what I am going to do. Help! :uhoh3:

You need to talk to the person who you accepted the job from and let them know that after thinking about it you realize that job is not for you (word it however you like) Chances are the person is kind and reasonable and will understand that you jumped the gun because you are a new grad and all excited, explain that to her. Chances are they will offer you a different position. It is not in your best interest or the patients you are charged to care for to have a job that you are not going to like. There is a very high percentage of new grads that quit their first job because it is not a good fit. Spare the facility and you from the agony of working a job that is not right for you and ending up quitting too soon anyway. I hope this all works out okay for you. Let us know.

Also realize that if those jobs in ER are being run to by others already employed there, chances you will get one as a new grad are about nil. Most of those jobs that people perceive as being more desirable get filled with seniority, so maybe go ahead and take the position you were offered and work it a while then transfer to another department that you feel might fit you better. Granted, you ultimately want to work in the general area you prefer to be happy, but sometimes things are worth waiting for. Hang in there, after those jobs get filled there maybe a better more attractive position open up in 6 months or a year. Be patient.
