Informatics Degree Programs Summary

We are pleased to announce the newest release of our survey of Nursing

Informatics programs in the US.

This is the 5th revision of our survey (completed August 2006), and is

available at Informatics Degree Programs Summary. This is part of the

most utilized and most comprehensive survey of academic informatics programs in the US. Earlier versions of the survey results and the methodology have been published in the Journal of the American Society of Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), Feb 2005, (

This site generally receives many thousands of visits each year,

particularly by students looking for graduate programs in informatics. We

strive to incorporate all relevant information, and to accurately represent

I can't help but wonder if one was interested in the health informatics certificate program what the benefit would be taking a nine hour program over a 17 or 20 hour program. I would presume that the nine hour course would be more of a refresher and the 17 hour course would provide more intensive training for those new to informatics. Follow up to this would be appreciated.

I'm sure the "benefit" would depend on the course content within the particular certificate program and what your goals and objectives are for enrolling in a certificate program.

I'd suggest you review the Program's course content. I'd also hazard a guess that benefits obtained might also correlate to the increased depth of content and complexity in a 20 hour program as apposed to a 9 hour program. Happy New Year and Hope that Helps!

How do I get start as a Nurse Health Informatics? Do I need some nursing (clinical) experiences first? What is your opinion on this? Can one jump right into this field (nurse informatics) without any clinical experience? Thank you in advance for your time.

Yes you will need clinical nursing experience before attempting to enter into this "Nursing" specialty.

Are you licensed an RN or LPN already?

Informatics nurses are licensed, meaning they have an RN or LPN.

I am an LPN, almost done with my Associate Degree in Nursing in less than 6months and getting my RN immediately thereafter. I am highly interested in Nursing Informatics. Pls advise on how to proceed. Currently taking the Excelsior College (excelsior.edu) Associate program.

What is it in "Nursing Informatics" that you want to do? Do you want to implement systems, work as an analyst building systems or trainer user to use systems? These are just a few of the potential responsibilities of an Informatics Nurse. I'd suggest you investigate and learn more about the specialty. Read about NI, join your local NI organization, attend a WINI.......... and or pick the brain of an experienced NI professional. See if there are any projects preparing for an implementation, testing, training, etc at your current organization that you can volunteer to be a super user in.

There is a great deal of valuable advise and information posted on this forum about the specialty of Nursing Informatics and HIT - please feel free to utilize this valuable resource.

Thanks for your reply. I am currently hunting for a college to give me a proper training and degree. I got Bellevue Univ. they av BS Management in Health Informatics.

by the way I am interested both in Implementations and end user trainng. they do not have any of such opportunity at my job.
