List of level IV NICU's

Updated:   Published

Can anyone tell me how many level IV NICU's we have nationwide?

I have tried researching on google but can't find any lists. The one's off the top of my head are seattle children's, primary children's, texas children's, kosair ky.

Are they only to be found at children's hospitals? How many are there?

I am confused about the level 3 vs. level 4 NICU classifications. Can somebody please explain the differences to me?

To my understanding, a level IV offers advanced and complex surgeries often unavailable in level III facilities. Specialty physicians are in house 24/7, and level IV's are always capable of ECMO.

Taken from wikipedia: In addition to providing the highest level of care, level IV NICU's:

  • Are located within an institution with the capability to provide surgical repair of complex congenital or acquired conditions
  • Maintain a full range of pediatric medical subspecialists, pediatric surgical subspecialists, and pediatric anesthesiologists at the site
  • Facilitate transport and provide outreach education.

Thank you so much for clarifying!

Perhaps we should start compiling a master list :)

I believe Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Boston Children's run neck & neck between the number 1 & 2 spots each year on the list of the nation's top children's hospitals. CHOP especially is well known & highly rated for it's NICU. Also in PA is Penn State Hershey, where my son spent time in their Level IV NICU 10 years ago.

I was just getting use to the idea of a level 3 with BCD now 4 I know Loma Linda University Hospital does ECMO but they were a level III unless they met the NEW criteria for Level IV you the west is behind in the times :-)

Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, TX is a large, all-private room level IV NICU :)

Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC is level IV. I have an interview there at the end of the month (which would be a move from the ER) and I'm super excited and nervous!
