Tonight on TV (Shark Tank) some guys were peddling organic skin care oils/cosmetics. When the Sharks asked them where they got the idea that their oils were good for cosmetic reasons, they said: "Our Mom is a certified wound nurse, and when one of us was burned at work, she told us to 'wait until the tingling stopped, then cover the burn with our organic oil'". I guess their Mom thought that keeping a burn nice and warm would help it HEAL?

I love that show, never miss it. Wouldn't the treatment of the burn depend on the classification of the burn itself?Their oil may be comparable to silvedene,we don't know. Without more details I don't see a problem with that statement
No, it wasn't like Silvadene, it was a bunch of home-made oils and creams for cosmetic purposes. If you missed the show it was last Tuesday- the group of 4 brothers that most of the panel derided as being too good looking (read between their lines, here), and wondered why 4 men (read between their lines, again) would think to try to start a cosmetic company. As far as their Mom's advice, well- in the way old days, before burns were understood, people were advised to put butter on burns, but at least people know what is in butter, for the most part? BTW a woman on the panel did make them an offer.
I have seen that episode, I believe it was a repeat. I guess I just don't understand your comment. Nor did I pick up on insinuations that the 4 guys were "too good looking-read between the lines" Are you saying you think the panel meant they were gay? So what?
My point is this-what is your point? Not enough info was given to make any kind of judgment. Are you saying the mother is a crappy nurse? The guys are gay and their products must me crap?I think you are making a big jump to a conclusion that cannot be made with the facts that were available.

Why would it matter to me if they are gay, or aren't gay. Who could care less. I was telling the person that commented about The Sharks what happened on that show, since she/he said that show is a personal favorite. Who said their products are 'c'? More so when I also said a Shark took them up on their company. I doubt they'd have gotten an offer if their products (for cosmetic purposes) were 'c'.
The point of my post was that some people still believe that putting oils, creams, or even butter on a burn is a good first aid technique, despite the 'fact' that oils, creams, or even butter trap heat inside the burn.

That was me-you are the one who pointed out that the panel seemed to question their sexuality-I did NOT get that impression from that episode AT ALL.
I also got the impression from your post that you were insinuating their product was crap.
My point is this-do you currently work in burn or wound care? Did they stop using Silvadene? We just used it on a resident who sustained a whopper of a burn on her hand. It was very effective. Again, my point was we don't know what their stuff is made out of but we do still use different creams, potion, lotions for various stages of wounds, burns and pressure ulcers. The theory of healing thoss injuries has not changed recently that I was aware of. Their mom told them to apply it after the "tingling stopped" That makes perfect sense to me for first aid treatment.Tepid water first then silvadene,Neosporin or bacitracin and a gauze dressing-that's what our docs order.
This post isn't about sexuality- it's about misconceptions about burn care. And yes I have worked in a burn center. And this isn't even about a healthcare environment- the burn, since you say you say this show, happened in a kitchen, yet Mom, the wound specialist, advised her son to apply cosmetic grade oils to that burn?
BTW- how many lay people (or even wound specialist nurses, with or without prescribing ability) have a supply of Silvadene on hand, or SHOULD?
You obviously, also, in fact, did NOT see this show: The Sharks that wanted out used the excuse that the brothers were too good looking (and they were all young, handsome, buff, men) to 'opt out' of their company, for no other reason that the market is flooded with cosmetic companies, almost all of which are operated by women, for women. One of the male Sharks even suggested that the female Shark who 'opted in', did so for the sole reason that she wanted to see these 4 men 'with their shirts off', and she feigned disgust at that comment.
This post is about burn care, nothing else, however, I repeat myself. I have to wonder why you are posting comments in this topic.
And please 'stage' the 'whopper' of a burn your patient sustained. And, be aware that, in case you simply made typos, that both Silvadene and Neosporin are proper nouns.
I'm also curious, really, how your patient (s) suffer (ed) burns in the first place? I'd like to have your thoughts on this- so that future patients can be saved such a painful, and reportable event. The fact you mention a protocol of tepid water, then this or that, makes it appear your patients are in routine jeopardy of being burned.
Typically when one wants to argue just for the sake of arguing I have found they will resort to pointing out grammar and spelling errors and twisting other poster's comments in lieu of facts. We see that behavior on this web site and fortunately these people violate TOS and end up going away. That's usually no loss because they are not really contributing to the community in a meaningful way, they are just trying to stir the pot. That's not a game I'm interested in playing so I won't be responding to that type of comment.
I won't stage the burn I was referring to, my point was the burn that was mentioned on the show was not staged and you made assumptions regarding it's treatment without all of the facts.
That patient I was referring to was S/P cva with long standing personality disorder. She was manipulative, cunning, and she had no consideration for the needs of others. She admitted to watching staff code themselves into the nursing lounge and one morningbefore 5am when night shift was doing their rounds she let herself into the nursing lounge and made herself instant coffee in the microwave. She spilled it on her hand and then hid the injury for several shifts. It was a sentinel event and no blame was placed on staff after the investigation was completed.
I mentioned first aide because you did-you well know that appropriate first aide care is not generally policy and protocol in a healthcare setting.Applying tepid water to take the heat out is appropriate first aide. I NEVER said this is our p and P in the nursing home. And lots of burn creams are OTC-including silvadene.
Thanks for your concern but my patients are certainly not in jeopardy of being burned or receiving inappropriate treatment .
I didn't realize Slivadene had been delisted to the OTC category, but if it was, the information online hasn't been updated to reflect that.
If it hasn't been made OTC, and ever is, though, hopefully that will drive down the price.

Silvadene is not OTC.
