Thanks, PhantomRN. Do you know if your friend has any printed information regarding the requirements? I can't find anything in any state nurse practice act that addresses this specific area.
I don't know What you mean when you say "regarding the requirements".
I know from speaking to her that she cannot tell a patient what to do. If she thinks they are in trouble she cannot diagnose she has to tell them to go to their MD or go to the ER.
She has written protocals that she follws, they tell her what questions to ask and if she gets a certain response it direscts her to the next question. It is all scripted. Say if she gets someone on the phone who has diarrhea---she has a protocol for that.
She also told me that they listen in onher calls sometimes to make sure she is not saying anything she shouldn't legality wise.
I will ask her what kind of data they gave her for you.

If you check out Carol Rutenburg website at tele-triage.com you may find some information. She has a article about this subject. Board of nursing is another area to check. However, depending on the State there may be no stand or information on telephone triage. The state of Michigan has nothing. Good luck

Thanks to all who have replied. I am still looking for info. I have another question for CA RN's. I was turned down for licensure (did get a temporary) because I didn't take microbiology in college. I'm a BSN with 12 yrs exp, multiple certs, etc. I took epidemiology as an approved alternative to micro. CA says I have to take micro to get a permanent license. I'm currently doing telephone triage in TX, taking CA calls, and the board is adamant (but has nothing written to back it up) that I have this license. Does CA have a pac with any other states to offer reciprocity? Thanks for any and all responses.
I don't know if you are still looking for information but here is some that might be helpful. I can tell you that CA is very strict on what you must take for your BSN. There are not many classes that you can substitute for another class. The website for the CA BRN is http://www.rn.ca.gov if that helps. They also have information under the Advisories and Publications about tele-nursing and triage in this state.
