Lehman College Nursing Program 2015. Do I have a chance?

I am in shambles. I have been working entirely hard studying while trying to take care of my family all to receive an 81 on my HESI exam this past weekend.

My overall GPA in all of the prerequisites is a 3.8. I got an A in all courses but chemistry where I received a B+.

I really can't afford to wait a whole year again. I had a C-section that became infected and I had to miss the first HESI exam in 2014. The job I have is just getting us by and if I have to apply to another university I will have pay out of pocket because they are way more expensive.

Feels like my life is going nowhere :( I can't even sleep.

Any nursing students from Lehman College? I would like to know if I had a chance of getting in. Or if there are other sites where I can retake the exam. Thanks

It's tough to say, but you MIGHT be okay because your GPA is high. What did you get on the critical thinking section? Lehman pretty much only cares about who is going to pass the NCLEX on their first attempt and the critical thinking section of the HESI gives them a better idea of who has the ability to reason the questions and who doesn't. The benchmark for them is 85 for every HESI (this is what they told us was an "acceptable" score for each HESI we had to take), so, I'm really not sure. Try not to lose hope and keep praying for the best -- you're right on the bubble and it could go either way!

Thank you for replying. I thought no one was going to. I spoke to the woman who administers the HESI exam at Lehman College and she told me all they worry about is a high GPA. She also told me that the HESI exam is just to pass or fail. If we pass each section with a 73 we automatically get in ONLY if our GPA is high.

Have you heard about this as well?

I haven't heard that, but, it wouldn't surprise me. I graduated from the accelerated program in August and we never found out exactly how the HESI factored into admission, but I can say with certainty the GPA counts for the bulk of the decision...at least, that's how it appeared. They always talked about the GPA cut-off, not the HESI cut-off, so there may be a lot of truth to what she said!

I guess because the admission HESI doesn't really focus too much on critical thinking that they may not put a lot of weight on it? I'm really not sure. Honestly, I wouldn't stress it too much. If you called and that's what they said, they're usually pretty accurate with their information -- they field A LOT of calls, especially around this time of year, and I doubt they would say something to mislead you. They pretty much keep the conversations short and to the point. If anything, they lean more toward dissuading people and putting doubt in their minds rather than actually giving them a sliver of hope. So, all signs are pointing toward an acceptance letter in June!! =)

Hi there,

I also took the hesi a few weeks ago and I was really worried about my score because I received an overall grade of 88 and a 910 on the critical thinking portion. I kept contacting the nursing department in an attempt to find out how the hesi was used to determine eligibility. They transferred me to someone who explained it in detail to me. She said that the passing grade for the hesi is a 75 and the passing grade for the critical thinking is a 700. They would like the students to score as high as possible on the critical thinking because it shows their potential for passing the nclex on the first try. Once a student passes the hesi with a 75 or higher they are placed in a potential accepted applicant pool. From there, the the highest GPA is accepted until all the seats are filled. For example, if you have a 3.9 GPA and you scored a 80 on the hesi you will be accepted over someone who scored a 90 on the hesi and has a 3.7 gpa. I hope this information was helpful.

I think your chances of being accepted are good because they said the cut off last year for the accelerated nursing program was a 3.7 and a 3.5 for the generic program.

I'm late to this conversation, but I'm sure you will be accepted to at least the generic program. A 3.8 is pretty much good enough for even accelerated, depending on the applicant pool of the year (some year the cut off is 3.8, some year the cut off is 3.9).

Like most people have heard, I was also told by the faculty that a 75 in HESI is all you need, and they might even not care about the Critical Thinking at all, since it seems that most people didn't do well. That exam was the complete opposite of what they told me, nursing knowledge was definitely required for it... I felt I was lied to, big time!

I also heard that too many people didn't do well on HESI this year that they had to re-administer the exam to some people. With all that considered, I think your chances of getting in is almost guaranteed. They will not mail out the decision letter until mid-June though, this anticipation is killing me!!!

At least another week to go before Nursing Department sends out the decision letters... anyone heard his/her decision early?

I am with dying with anticipation waiting for that admission letter to come in. Nothing has been sent out as of yet though. Probably by next week

My earliest estimate is that they will mail out the letters on Monday the 15th. I wish I could just call and find out the result... someone on this forum had mentioned that he/she called before the letters were mailed and found out that he/she was accepted... this wait is killing me!!!!

Hello everyone,

I called the nursing program this past friday to see when the letters would be sent out. I was curious to know because I have read previous posts from applicant 2 or 3 years ago and they received their acceptance letters before the middle of june. The secretary of the nursing department told me that they are not sending out letters until the end of june. She said hopefully they will be sending them out by june 20th because they are still reviewing all of the applications. If anyone has heard differently please share the information. I feel so anxious anticipating the arrival of these acceptance letters.

Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! I will die from anticipation before the end of june!!!!
