I am in shambles. I have been working entirely hard studying while trying to take care of my family all to receive an 81 on my HESI exam this past weekend.
My overall GPA in all of the prerequisites is a 3.8. I got an A in all courses but chemistry where I received a B+.
I really can't afford to wait a whole year again. I had a C-section that became infected and I had to miss the first HESI exam in 2014. The job I have is just getting us by and if I have to apply to another university I will have pay out of pocket because they are way more expensive.
Feels like my life is going nowhere I can't even sleep.
Any nursing students from Lehman College? I would like to know if I had a chance of getting in. Or if there are other sites where I can retake the exam. Thanks
ahreeol, I'm pretty sure most people guessed nearly everything on the Critical Thinking part. I looked at the NCLEX questions and they are very similar. The Critical Thinking most definitely required some basic nursing knowledge that pre-nursing students haven't learned. The only questions I was able to answer confidently were "ethics".
I felt the need to mention it because I'm sure most of us were told otherwise by many sources. And guess what, they are all lies. I have only been told that "you don't need any nursing knowledge, you just need to read carefully and think critically. This test wants to know how well you can think on your feet." That is total BS.
I hope everyone can just stop worrying about the Critical Thinking a little bit, 'cause we have enough to worry about as is... late June feels soooooooooooooo far away....
@starvingrtst
I know that it seems so far away but the wait will soon be over. April and may passed by extremely quickly so let's hope june does as well. You have great grades so you don't have anything to worry about.
@aheerol,
Thanks for the reassurance about the critical thinking portion.
Good news everyone!,
I spoke to the secretary in the nursing department today to find out if they received my official transcript. They have, so I asked when the application responses would be sent out and she told me they're trying to send them all out this week. So we should be receiving them by the end of this week or the beginning of next week. I was relieved after speaking to her and I wanted to share the news with everyone. It's a relief to know that we don't have to wait until the end of the month!
When i said "I completely guessed" I actually meant i completely guessed, lol. I never even read the questions for most of them. And to some extent you're completely right in feeling misinformed. Those questions are a lot like the nursing questions you get tested on when you enter nursing school. So, feeling cheated is natural (it's exactly how i felt).
However, they still are a good indicator of how well you'll think as a nurse. A lot of those questions focus on having good judgement and obviously as a nurse this is a trait you need to have to succeed.
I heard back from lehman last year on June 19th. Hopefully you guys do hear back from them before that. I know the waiting sucks.
But good luck to everyone. I'm sure i'll see you all next semester.
ahreeol,
I did read all the questions so I had a very clear grasp on what kind of questions they are. Ethics was about 20% of the whole test, as indicated by the summary report afterward, and was the only section where I was able to answer with confidence.
The rest 80% of the test mostly require the knowledge of symptoms and severity of diseases and infections. 90% of the time I have no idea what those diseases are and without knowing the symptoms and how it affects patients, there is no way of answering them by reading and thinking. Clues just aren't there.
Anyway, my point being, even though I read everything, I think I completely guessed about 75% of the entire test. Since only 25% of the test didn't require specific knowledge on various diseases/condition/nursing priorities on each "answer choice".
I just did some NCLEX sample questions yesterday, and I did better on NCLEX on the Critical Thinking... go figure.
StarvingRtist,
I completely get what you're trying to say but just know that there is a specific mindset you have to have for nursing that revolves around having good judgement even when you don't know the material. This will happen a lot once you get in. You'll literally be faced with questions on subjects you never touched on in class or the textbook. And as a critical thinker, you're supposed to be able to pick the "best" nursing action. It sucks but NCLEX style questions are what make nursing classes hard.
There's a book that i reallyyy recommend you get your first semester of nursing. It's called: Fundamentals of Nursing- Content Review Plus Practice Questions. It really puts you into that nursing mentality and builds on your critical thinking skills.

Hey Destin293! :) nice to see you still active.
Guys, the critical thinking part doesn't matter. I went headstrong knowing this last year and completely guessed on nearly all my answers. I got under 700. I still got in. All they care about is that you pass everything else with a 75. I got a 92 overall (97-98 on the anatomy portion) when i took it. You guys should be fine.
