Legal nurse consulting

Specializes in Adult and Pediatric I C U.

I was about to enroll in a CLNC program, but I am very concerned about success in this field because it is a lot of money and I am not working right now because I have idiopathic PAH. I have always been interested in risk management and legal issues in healthcare. With 21 years of experience in adult and pediatric critical care, I have had to provide depositions on legal cases a few times and I just find it interesting. Has anyone completed an LNC certification program, and either been successful or unsuccessful? Any advice would be appreciated.

Specializes in Vents, Telemetry, Home Care, Home infusion.

Great advice in AN's Legal Nurse forum.  Hope your idiopathic PAH is controlled allowing you to persue this nurse specialty. My DH developed condition found help at  Penn Medicines Pulmonary Hypertension Program.

Specializes in ICU, Trauma, CCT,Emergency, Flight, OR Nursing.

Let me just say that taking these expensive courses DO NOT guarantee you a job. I have been a LNC for the past 9years and never took the courses or certification exams and always have had a steady number of cases that I work on. Granted, I work full time in the hospital as an OR nurse now so enjoy the LN Consulting as a side hustle . Attorneys want experienced nurses in specific specialties to review and give opinion on the care rendered and any breaches of the standards , policy or state nursing legislation. You serve as their interpreter of all things nursing/ medical and sometimes an expert witness if called upon to do so. My best advice is to be really experienced in a specialty , be certified in that specialty, be involved at a professional level within your professional nursing association , be a preceptor and become a member of AALNC.org , advertise /market yourself on LinkedIn as a LNC, find a LNC mentor that you can volunteer to work with and observe the process . The ExpertInstitute is another free opportunity to get your name out there to be sought out by attorney clients. For those new to the speciality , definitely become a member of the AALNC as they have great webinars, conferences, books, networking events a LNC locator for attorneys and many opportunities to network and learn from the "experts" and those with many years experience in this field.
