Left tele med-surg

Published

At the beginning of the month i left my tele med surg job. I was working night shift 7-7 at a large inner city hospital. It became impossible for me to sleep r/t stress and messed up night sleep / burnout so I quit WITH NO NOTICE. It became physically impossible for me to come to work on 10mins of sleep in 24hours so I could not put patients at risk, and I had already called out several times. I now have spent very little effort applying for jobs. I applied to maybe 5jobs and have gotten call backs from 3 out of 5. 1 job is at a larger inner city hospital 7-3 day or 3-11 evening float medsurg tele position, 3-11 psych position at large hospital, or 9-5 occupational health rn job at a corporation. I have already burnt out from the hospital setting but fear stepping away from the bed side. I am in the running for the occupational health rn job which seems to be much more laid back. Should I jump back in the lava with the prestigious” hospital? try my liking in psych? What would you do , or what have you done in similar situations?

If I were you I would just avoid night shift. That may have been your culprit for your burn out. Or it may have been the unit. Would you want to go back to med surg tele? If I were you I'd probably go with the occupational health job only because it seems a lot more stressful. If you work there and feel like you still need to do bedside, you can always put in your notice and switch back over. Good luck

Quitting with no notice is a huge boo-boo. Are you sure you are in the running for anything? ( been there done that). Call backs are a lot different than job offers.

Wait and see what actually offers you receive. Get back to us.

I had to quit. I was physically ill an unable to show up for work. I did not do a no call no show. 2 years on nights an my sleep was a mess an no day spots open. Want me to show up to a twelve hour shift on 10 minsof sleep an have god know what happen. There are certain times when the right thing to do is step down.

You did not step down... you quit on the spot. Why could you not just call in? Two years of sleep disturbance leads to many issues. Did you discuss this with your health care provider? A FMLA and treatment could have prevented your drastic action.

I am saying, you need to take care of yourself, you are not doing that.

Future employers do not give a rat's patooty WHY you quit on the spot, they only know that you did. I certainly wish you the best finding a new position, however recruiters will not.

Unfortunately, if one quits on the spot, they are usually not eligible for rehire within the parent company. Depends on what your facility policy is. So that may preclude you from other jobs. So I would find that out, as some applications say "are you ineligible for rehire" blah blah stuff.

This is a medical issue, and not giving medical advice per AN TOS, I would see if getting a note from your PCP for your file may be to your benefit.

Not working night shift is perhaps the answer, however, if this happens in the future I would see a PCP if you are calling out sick often. So you have a paper trail that it occurs if you work nights.

After becoming sick and tired of night shift, I submitted a 30-day notice of resignation to give my former employer ample time to hire my replacement. I wouldn't burn bridges by quitting on the spot.
