Left Nursing to Pursue Pharmaceutical Sales?

Published

I am a L&D nurse considering a career change into Pharmaceutical Sales. I have been offered a position with a large company that has a good reputation. Has anyone thought of using their nursing background in other areas of healthcare such as pharmaceuticals? If so, any pros and cons you can pass along? Thanks so much!

Almost all the drug reps I have met were former nurses. One nurse actually went and worked for a very reputable company and quit after one year. She did not like having to store the large amount of samples at her own expense (a lot more than we think- think about all the doodads the drug reps bring and the samples, etc) and she did not like the constant traveling. She now is working CVICU at a regional heart center, and says she find that less stressful. She and her Nurse husband have managed to buy and complete a huge home this year, and drive very expensive vehicles (that is what they, not me, are into) so neither is doing too bad as just nurses.

However, to each their own, many seem to enjoy getting dressed up in high heels and panty hose each day!!!!

I am in pharmaceutical however not sales. Only know there is much traveling and if you have the 'selling' type personality it might be enjoyable to you.

There are many areas within the pharmaceutical arena that want nurses for various reasons--most require at least a BSN but not all. The benefits and pay are usually better not to mention the hours.
