Left the ICU after 1.5 yrs, where to next?

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, I'm an RN with 1.5 years of experience in a cancer center's ICU. After my first year, I found myself feeling miserable and hating my job to the extent that I was willing to quit without having another job lined up. I've been unemployed for 1 month now and feel much better overall, but now I find myself not getting any job offers. I do not aspire to become a CRNA and I no longer want to work in a bedside position. I am interested in something procedural such as IR. Is there anyone who started out in ICU that found their niche in a procedural RN position and what is it?

With your oncology background, what about a free standing or clinic based chemo infusion center?

If you found the ICU claustrophobic and suffocating, I recommend emergency room nursing.

Well... you're not wrong. If nursing has a Wild Wild West, it's ER...

You'll quickly learn why ER nurses don't know (care…) when the patient pooped last or what the brain bleed patient's skin looks like or why we didn't treat the 180 sugar.

As I find myself back at this thread, I just wanted to post a quick update for anyone who stumbles upon this. After almost 3 months of unemployment and feeling as if I would not be hired in a non-bedside position, I am starting a new RN position in endoscopy. Thank you to those who gave me their suggestions!

Good luck in this new position!
