Leaving the profession to do...what?

Published

I read an interesting thread on people leaving professions to join our ranks of nursing. Yet thousands supposidly are leaving the profession to persue other interests. To do What?

No, no Wallmart greeter positions open here.... Those of you leaving, what is the adgenda? If so many are leaving, pre-retirement, where are you all going?

Please no flaming for those planning to or physicaly passing the proverbial torch!

I am really glad that some people go into this career field for the duration of their working life, as these are the absolute experts. Some like to term it a "calling" Others can truely empathize with each patient and make it their life's work.

I am just not one of them.

I am tired. I'm 26, been a nurse 3 yrs, and I am tired. I had doubts when I was in college, but I stuck it out and got my BSN. I am looking to the future, and fully realize that nursing is not "my" calling. A friend and I (who is also a nurse) are in process of starting a wedding videography business. I am not sure where exactly I will end up with this, but at least I am in charge of my own future. I also am toying with the idea of heading back to college for an MBA, as a sound business foundation is an asset in any field.

I am thankful for those who can endure and prosper in this profession and wish them all the best.

i have alot of friends who left nursing for a much higher calling... motherhood :)

I have left temporarily to take care of my son, but do plan on returning soon. During my career the only thing that has kept me sane is trying different types of nursing, from nurse practitioner to school nurse to SICU to ER to education. It keeps me from burning out. However, I know many nurses who have left nursing to pursue other careers including: law school (now a lawyer), a pharm representative, one bought a small mexican food stand, one went back to school to be a minister, a mortgage banker, and even one who started a business doing specialized interior painting like faux finishes. Not one has regretted their decision...

To Fly under ones own power....

By the way I really Like your Picture. :)

I know several nurses who have left nursing, and are now working in other fields. These include:

Pet grooming, veterinary tech, owning a flower shop, full time online auctions and image consultant, permanent make-up tattooing, hair stylist, nail tech, grocery checker, and a clerk at a cinnamon bun shop.
