do you think it's bad if you start a new nursing job and have to take off for maternity leave about 9 months after you start? Also will jobs let you do this is just started working for them?

To the best of knowledge, you may not fall under the Family Medical Leave act unless you have 1,250 of hours worked for your employer in the preceding 12 months. This means that you might end up being effectively terminated, as they will not have an obligation to hold your position for you. I suggest you search for sites explaining the FMLA.

With the amount of time and money they have paid into training you, I would think you will have a job awaiting you once you had the routing 6-8weeks off. As far as fmla, that is more about extended time off. If your having a baby, and most woman do, they will and do deal with it all the time. Best of luck!
