I accepted an amazing position at the Health Department. I'll be performing autonomous women's health assessments, performing breast exams, pap smears, and I'll be in charge of STD's as well. I'll provide counseling and education regarding birth control and other women's health issues like mammograms.
Thanks! I am very excited. I plan to stay my career at this job. But you just never know which is why I was worried about messing up by leaving the hospital after 6 months. But yes this job is hard to come by and I knew it wouldn't wait for me! So I snagged it! If I can I plan to get my NP and move up as an NP in this same facility. I'm very happy with the people and the environment.
Congrats, you are now a Public Health Nurse!!!! I would not worry about leaving the acute care setting unless you liked working as an acute care nurse. If you really want to continue to be an acute care nurse, then take a PRN job at some point. Otherwise put 100% of your focus in Public Health. Join this forum: Public / Community Health Nursing to meet other nurses and to gain more information about your new specialty. Good luck!

Well I successfully made it to the 6 month mark. My husband and kids finally said enough with the night shifts though and they couldn't take it any more. My boss wouldn't move me to days even though there was a position open! At this same time an amazing Mon-Fri no holidays nursing job was offered to me and I accepted. I'm nervous though about one thing... Am I cutting myself off from ever being able to work in the hospital again by leaving with only 6 mos experience? I hate to limit my career. I do plan to get my MSN NP but of course it's not guaranteed I'll get in. I'm scared if down the road this job doesn't work out (let's say we move) I'll have trouble finding employment as a BSN RN with only 6 mos hospital. I guess it doesn't matter as the decision has already been made. But it would make me feel better i guess if someone could jump in and tell me I'd still marketable.
