leave of absence for your wedding

Hi please help me... i just started work as an RN permanent job in USA. im a foreign trained nurse planning to go back to my country and get married in about 6 months from now. Do you think i would be granted for a leave of absence for my wedding? is it too soon from the start of my employment to apply for a leave? if it is too soon, when can i probably be granted for a leave? and how long would i probably apply for a leave? would 4 weeks be too long? thanks i appreciate your help..

Have you discussed these questions with your manager or HR? Different places have different rules. In general, the hospitals where I've worked don't allow more than 2 weeks off of regular PTO and only one week in the first year.

thank you... nope i haven't brought this up yet with my manager. i guess 1 week wont be enough time for our wedding especially when its out of the country. i guess ill try to request from our manager. thanks.

Most US employers have rules about how much vacation time you earn based on how long you've been working there, and many also have lots of rules about how much time you can take off at once, how far in advance you have to request leave, etc. I've never heard of a US employer that had special rules for vacation time to get married! What does your employee handbook (or policy/procedure manual) say about your employer's vacation/leave policies? It's hard for me to imagine that anyone working less than a year would be eligible for a month of leave.

In future situations, I would recommend letting the DON know when you interview that you had an event coming up that was planned ahead of time. You MIGHT be able to get time without pay but not paid time off. For example, my parents had paid in advance for a birthday trip for me (to go with them) to Las Vegas for a week. I started a new job 6 months prior to the trip, told the DON about it during the 2nd interview and was hired anyway, got the time off (unpaid) with no problems. Of course a whole month off may be trickier --that's a lot of shifts to try to cover.:twocents::ancong!: on your wedding
