Learning Packets

Hi! I am new to staff development. I have a staff base of approx. 230 employees.

After my first week of watching the orientation process I felt overwhelmed by the amount of paper given during orientation. Our hospital uses 'learning packets' for JCAHO/CMS requirements. Is there anyone here who is familiar with the process of learning packets?

I not familiar with learning packets, but I am familiar with the experience of being "initiated" into staff development:)

My suggestion is that you tackle one thing at a time. Most of my "upgrades" to orientation have been changes to one section or one process of orientation at a time. That way I can prepare quality materials and see how it actually works during orientation.

As I'm preparing my new materials, I look at regulations/ compliance issues and gather input from both new and seasoned staff on topics. Some things I've introduced have worked well, some not so much.

I agree that the amount of paper work during orientation is overwhelming. We have new RN's for 3 days in addition to the 3 days they are with HR. This means for the first 6 days they never get to the unit. How much they actually retain is questionable at best. I would also be open to any ideas or suggestions for making this less tedious.

Our orientees have a day with HR. Three days with me to go thru hospital policy and procedure, hospital competencies for the year, and TJC and CMS. They have two days in MANDT training, and finally on Friday afternoon I am able to escort them to the units to visualize the units and for introductions.

My department has been under Nursing Administration. We have had a new Chief Operating Officer hired within the past two weeks, and Staff Education has been moved under him. He has plans to restructure our orientation process using the Annapolis Coalition goals.
