Due to rediculous staffing ratios8-10 pts on a intermediate care unit with cardiac drips, temp pacers, tavrs , pci, etc I want out! I've applied to non staff jobs with some interviews and no luck. I think its because I've been doing the other for over 10 years. No one wants to teach an older person anything new? Im very very willing to learn, but seems thats not good enough. I don't want to travel more than an hour , which makes things difficult( I already travel 1 hr)
that would mean picking up and moving after paying on house for 21 years.it would be different if I was younger.
what do you do ? Id love to actually do c a non nursing job , but cant live on 20 bucks an hour, at least here in nys.?

I've walked in your shoes and totally get it! Working full-time consumes so much of our life, time, and energy (physical and emotional) to the point that if you're miserable at work, you're also miserable at home. I've had periods in my life of significant career dissatisfaction and understand your feelings of being stuck. Perhaps you can't leave the profession altogether due to your particular life circumstances, but could you reduce debt, cut back, do with less, downsize...so that you can cut back on your hours? If you're really miserable in life and super unhappy, why not move? A change of scenery and a new start might be just what you need.

There has to be some non-hospital jobs within an hours travel. Look into clinics, especially if there are any affiliated with your employer as you could possibly transfer. There's definitely advantages if that's a possibility. Usually internal hires/transfers have precedence over outside candidates plus you would keep your same employer so you would retain any seniority benefits like PTO accrual and sick time. It actually might be easier to get a transfer out of the hospital altogether rather than just a transfer to a different floor.
There's also corrections, dialysis, school nursing etc. it might be worth your time to start exploring what else is available in your area. Whatever you ultimately decide to do it could possibly mean a pay cut, but probably not one so huge that you couldn't live with it.
