Laryngeal mask for neonates?

Anyone use these? They're described in the newest NRP book. I've seen one used once, when I took a baby to CT and the anesthesiologist used one after giving propofol to maintain the baby's airway and give CPAP during the procedure (to avoid intubating). The NRP book doesn't indicate that they will be a part of normal resuscitation but describes their possible uses. I'm not even sure my hospital HAS these. They sound interesting though.

Let's ask the CRNA's.

yes- they use lma's on neonates - personally anything smaller than a 2, i feel, doesn't do the job - so they buy tubes...

but to answer your question - yes - LMA's are used.

I couldn't find a link [for a picure] to one small enough for a newborn. What company makes them?

Thanks for the info.

LMA of North America makes them. Their website is lmana.com.

I was wondering about these a few months ago.

We have them, but have yet to use them.

I looked @ that site before, couldn't find a Neonatal one.

This page has a chart, they only go down to 5K, which really limits the use in NICU.

The size 1 LMA Classic and LMA Unique can go up to 5kg, with the 1.5 going up to 10kg.

The LMA you were looking at (the LMA Proseal) doesn't come in a size 1 - the LMA Proseal allows an orogastric tube to be passed through it into the stomach. The LMA Classic (the reusable LMA) and the LMA Unique (the disposable LMA) both go down to size 1, which can go up to 5kg.

Here are links:

There probably are somewhat limited uses for LMAs in NICU settings, but can be frequently used when neonates need anesthesia in appropriate situations. Also extremely helpful in emergency situations when tracheal intubation is difficult.
