I am on the hunt for a laptop to use for the duration of my nursing program. I need a computer that will run Java and microsoft programs. Although I wanted a macbook I just simply can't afford it at this time. What are some good/cheaper laptops. I don't need anything fancy because it will be strictly for research and typing papers. Any recommendations?

For your basic needs pretty much any laptop that runs on Windows will suit your needs. There are hundreds of laptops in the 250-450 range. Just shop around online and find one you like, you could also go to a store like best buy and talk to someone.

I know you said you cannot afford a Mac. I would wait till the end of august into september and look at Best Buy, they generally have great deals on them! They are well worth the money and will last many years, as apposed to a PC which will last much less

You can also look on craigslist for used Macs.

This is not necessarily true...my Compaq Presario desktop PC lasted 12 years (2003 to 2015) with no issues and my 7-year-old HP laptop (manufactured in 2009) was still working when I donated it to the Salvation Army a few months ago.

Mac/Apple products are like the Mercedes Benz of the computing world, whereas Windows PCs are akin to the Chevrolets of the computing world. Macs are more aesthetically pleasing on the eye and constructed of the highest quality components, so you pay more for what is essentially a luxury product.

Likewise, Windows PCs are not nearly as visually appealing, but will last for many years if the owner maintains them properly, so you pay significantly less for what is basically a plebeian product.

I used my trusty old Compaq Presario desktop PC and my HP laptop to get through nursing school. They provided me with many years of dependable performance.

I recently 'upgraded' to newer devices. I've got a Chromebase desktop (Chrome OS) and a Gateway laptop (Windows 10 OS). The Gateway cost me $175 and the Chromebase cost $295.

I agree completely. I have a MacBook Air and I love it. I'm the only one in my class that uses this but I'm also the only one in class that never has to worry about charging my laptop during class when I'm typing lecture notes for a couple of hours. The battery life and the weightlessness are incredible. QVC has special prices and runs offers for splitting up the payments and there's no interest. Just a suggestion. Good Luck!
