LaGuardia student, LPN advice needed

U.S.A. New York

Hello,

I'm currently majoring in nursing at LaGuardia Community College. It is my first semester and I am aware that it is highly competitive. I am getting an A in all of my classes, but I may be getting an A minus in my A and P class. And you guys will likely know what that means...:uhoh21:

Anyway, I am applying for candidacy in the spring just for kicks. IF I get into the program, great. If I don't, I am taking some precautions right now. I will take the NLN to apply to nursing schools for next fall (Beth Israel is my first choice). I'm also considering doing the LPN program at LAGCC so that if I do become an LPN, I will at least have a skill and I can start working to pay off my loans little by little. I will still pursue RN.

What do you guys think, should I apply for the LPN or would I save time and money going straight for the RN?

hey Plain Vanilla (or any one else who knows the teachers)... i was wondering if i was to send you my email or vice versa you would be able to send me those names of the professors that you were talking about(because they were all censored out)... i have to register for some classes next week at laGuardia... thanks for all the help!!

What classes are you taking? I already registered but the bad thing is that for the classes i registered for there was no info on the professor. They didn't put the professors name on it. I'm just going to take my chances and to top that off I work full-time so i'm trying to fit the class schedule into my job schedule. I'm taking Thursday class starting 5:45-7:55... I'm not sure who the professor is for that but hey i'm always willing to be friends and study together to ace that course. *winks* I'm also taking the SSy 101 again to ace that as well but thats a saturday class. Sat classes i think prof are more leneant.

To Plain Vanilla: do you know who teaches those courses?

Thanks!

Also you guys are always welcome to email me if you want to chat about classes... my email is: [email protected].

Thanks!

Hey all,

I have not checked this website in some time and I just wanted to say that I need to check it more often! I will PM you guys my email.

I have been thinking about it some more and I figure that when it comes down to the human biology and physiology classes, they will all be somewhat severe regardless of the professor.

The one trend I did notice for the human biology was this: follow the slides in lecture. And if you can, read the chapter you need before the lecture. When you all get the book, you'll see that it is extremely large and the chapters are going to be very long and detailed. Despite that, get whatever you can out of the chapter.

The lecture is typically an hour or hour and a half long and I didn't have a very long attention span. Whenever I read the chapter beforehand, I was able to fully pay attention in lecture and understand everything the professor talked about in class. However there were times where I didn't make time to read a chapter before the lecture. By the time I was in that lecture, I spent the time fidgeting, worrying about why I didn't make time to read the chapter because all the information being given sounded like gobbledygook, and then my mind would wander to worry about my other classes and what I would have for lunch later.

Even though the chapters are really long and I noticed a lot of people liked to study the summarized chapter reviews that are provided by the professor on blackboard, read the chapters more than once if you can. Often times I reread a chapter because I noticed that I would pick up more information from the first time around. I had to skim a lot of time from my hobbies to do this, but it was worth it.

Another thing to keep in mind is to check quiz and midterm/final scantron answers after they are graded to make sure nothing is marked wrong. More than once I found errors on some of my quizzes and two errors on one of my midterms. I was able to notice they were graded incorrectly because of some obscure passage I read in the book (which is why I ended up rereading chapters). If I thought I got an answer right that was marked wrong, I waited after class to show the professor and they were usually kind enough to change the grade. At first the professor might suggest that the answer is graded correctly, but if you show them the supporting reason from the book they usually change it.

(Although I did have one experience where a professor was unwilling to change an answer marked as wrong because the question was from a practice quiz on the slide...and in which case goes back to following the slides).

Initially I thought that LaGuardia's nursing programs were a bit unfair for demanding near perfect GPAs for admission, but in hindsight it is a pretty good thing because you're bound to really know your stuff if you get in.

hmm... to think of it i'm starting to feel a lil discourage. I was talking to my dad and he's the type that thinks you can't make it.. especially if its hard to do. I told him I was going for nursing and he's like are you sure? It's hard.. I don't know.. This fall I'm taking Math 106 and psychology ... I'm hoping to get both A's in those courses. I mean if you guys can tell me.. how hard is the courses... I mean I took INtro psychology and that one was 4 credits in my old school but it was hard.. I think maybe b/c its 4 credits. At laguardia it is only 3 credits. As for Math 106.. I don't even know what you will be doing there. If you guys can possible give me some advice.. I would appreciate it.

Hey Honest!! i also signed up for psychology for the fall... and i honestly can say that im not too happy about ssy101... i had a psych class back when i was in highschool and i failed terribly ...so im a lil nervous..but i know i can do it... math 106 im looking forward to take...do you know who your prof. are yet for your classes?.. are those the only 2 classes taht youll be taking i the fall?

Yes, I am taking only 2 classes in the fall... The Psy 101 class will be for the Sat class... The Math 106 will be for my evening thursday class. I am nervous too b/c I took Psy back in my 4 year institute and that was pretty hard.. I didn't fail but I just didn't do very well. It was also 4 credit so that maybe explains why there was so much work. I hope this 3 credit psychology course is better.

I am not sure which professor I am taking.. I called the department and they told me that I will have to call back one week before school start. They are not yet sure who's teaches those courses.

What days are you taking for the psy and math 106 class.. maybe we can have the classes together..

I had looked into the Sat. Psy101 class..but i decided to break the class down .. So For Psy 101 i have class Mon, Tue,Thur. I also have Eng101 Wed & Fri..And My math class.. i dont remember exactly what day it is.. but its a morn mid afternoon class. Is this going to be your 1st semester here?

I'm not sure if I replied to this thread yet but yes it is my first semester at Laguardia ... however I'm going for my second degree. I'm hoping to just finish this all up w/o any problems at all.. or nothing stopping me. ARe you going for LPN or for your RN? I'm going to LPN first so that I can get the hospital to pay for my RN oncei got for it and work for them.

Ok guys maybe you can help me out. I know we're not suppose to mention any prof names on this site. However I am taking a SSy 101 class and I need help in it. A lot of people are saying this prof is from the notes and from the textbook and his exams are tricky. If anyone who has taken this class can send me a pm it would definitely be helpful!

Hi EVeryone.. this basically goes out to any of the students taking the nursing courses. I"m actually going to be taking the BIO 1 in january and its an intensive 6 weeks course.
