Hello!
I've started the petition "Governor Rick Perry: Stop Limiting Access to Healthcare for Low-Income Women" and need your help to get it off the ground.
Will you take 30 seconds to sign it right now? Here's the link:
Here's why it's important:
Governor Rick Perry is using women as political pawns. His fight to exclude Planned Parenthood from the Women's Health Program is placing women's health at risk. Planned Parenthood has provided life-saving healthcare interventions, such as cancer screenings and HIV testing, and preventive care including well woman exams and prenatal care for nearly half of Texas' low-income and uninsured woman. Hundreds of thousands of Texan woman will go without the crucial healthcare that they need because of Governor Perry's war against Planned Parenthood. Texas was already in a health crisis before Governor Perry launched his assault against Planned Parenthood and women's health due to a widespread physician shortage. Now as a result of his actions low-income women and families will have even less access to healthcare providers. Furthermore, limiting access further affects everyone's healthcare by creating an even larger burden on already overcrowded emergency rooms and charitable clinics.
Governor Perry has instead increased funding to faith-based "clinics" which do not actually provide any healthcare at all. Women's health affects everyone. Without healthy women there are no healthy children, no healthy families. Texas women need to stand together to let Governor Perry and other Texas officials know that we are capable of choosing our own healthcare providers and we will not allow their own personal beliefs and politics jeopardize our health. Please join me in the fight to keep the government out the patient-provider relationship.

Thanks!

Abortion is legal in this country, where are people not allowed to have abortions in this country?
In those states that have passed legislation making it difficult if not impossible for the abortion providers to meet the requirements...resulting in no access to that care in those communities and states.

In these areas why can't people volunteer to provide transportation and donate money to help pay for the procedures? Why is it the governments responsibility? There seem to be plenty of people to protest and speak out in support of abortion, where are they when it comes time for a woman to have one. Why can't these people form charitable organizations to help pay for and provide transportation for the procedure?
Also, moving forward, it would seem that the most obvious way to deal with the issue of abortion is to provide education, not just on birth control but on abstinence. Are these same abortion supporters out preaching in suport of abstinence and personal responsibility? Many abortion supporters seem to want a choice, but not the responsibility that goes with it.
Good luck with the petition.
Rick Perry has demonstrated over and over again that he is clueless.
First, he supported HPV vaccination.
Then, he attacks Planned Parenthood.
These people are ALL out of control- mostly as a result of their religious views or at least their perception that these loudmouthed christian fanatics are who they have to appease if they want to get elected.
It just goes to show why the rest of us have to turn out for elections, every election.
When we let these dimwits get in at the state level, bad things happen.
Well I think that the point with this is forcing people who are very much against something to pay for it for someone else. If something is going to be paid for with tax dollars by these people, it should reflect the values of the majority, shouldn't it?
I very much don't agree with my tax dollars paying for nation building. We don't get to itemize our tax dollar spending, we all have to contribute to things we don't agree with.
Good news just breaking Judge orders 'plan B' contraceptive pill to be available for women of all ages ? RT USA

Well I'm not sure how much STATE tax funds go to pay for nation building. But I agree with you, I would much rather money be spent on the citizens paying these taxes as opposed to other countries, especially when your citizens needs help.
Sure, we don't get to itemize tax dollar spending. But the person who gets popular vote tends to reflect the values of the voters, at least a majority of them. This representative will then make choices that reflect these values. If someone lives in this state and is not happy with the choices, they can go elsewhere, somewhere that has a representative who's values reflect their own.
Oh wow, yes, lets encourage young girls to have unprotected sex, because now there is just another way they can shirk consequences of those actions.
Before you flame, there is a huge difference between an adult with maturity and understanding, vs. a hormonal 16 year old, who might cave to pressure from a boy, or friends, or wtv. Someone who doesn't understand what can happen. I'd much rather pay for condoms than Plan B to be provided to everyone...

Again, personal attacks are not helpful to the discussion. Personal attacks, and baseless accusations seem to be a common liberal tactic in the absence of logic and common sense.
I respectfully defer to the rest of you to continue the discussion, I have nothing left to add except to say "good luck".

Laborer likes to make personal attacks to make him/herself look bigger and smarter. Happens a lot. Also happens a lot that when people disagree on AN, it often turns into mud-slinging. Sad.
