Any hospital that has a maternity unit needs midwives, thats the catch... in Australia there is distinction between a Registered Nurse and a Registered Midwife, some midwives were nurses, some have only done a straight midwifery degree.
You would have to contact a states nursing board to find out if you qualify as a midwife or not...mind you they are so desperate an RN with loads of maternity experience would be most gratefully be welcomed.
In Australia one needs to be a midwife to care for a woman during labour and birth. In the state I work in it is illegal to provide care during birth unless you are a midwife or training to be one(or a dr or a trainee paramedic). Some places have RNs working in antenatal and postnatal units alongside midwives; but that is due to midwife shortages usually.
