Labor and Delivery Nurse wanting to be a Cardiac NP

Published

Hello All!!! I have been an L&D nurse for 5 years and still currently work in L&D. I am also in school for FNP. I have about 1.5 years left before I am done. Since the beginning of this year I have been quite interested in cardiology and would love to become a cardiac NP upon graduating. However, all of my experience is in L&D. I am weary of switching to another unit while being in school because it would be alot on me to learn a whole new area and unit while trying to learn concpets in school AND learning in clinical, not to mention day-to-day life. Essentially, I am comfortable with L&D and can easily work without feeling like I have to learn new concepts everyday. Though I know it would be more advantageous to get experience NOW in cardiac nursing, would it completely cancel me out from becoMing a cadiac NP with no prior cardiac experience? I do plan on getting my clinicls in cardiology. Thanks for any and all advice. If there are any Cardiac NP's out there that had no prior experience in cardiology please comment as well!!

Specializes in ER.

I would line up the clinicals now and get acquainted with the doctors now. It isn't impossible and if you're willing to move, it will be more helpful.
