Knocked down a few notches. need advice

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I currently attend Bryant & Stratton for Medical Assisting and after first semester decided that I want to be a nurse after doing research. I know my school requires the Teas test to enter so the other day I contacted the academic counselor to ask if I can switch into the nursing program. She advised me that because my accuplacer test scored me in pre-college algebra that I would have to complete the whole medical assisting program graduate and come back and reapply for the nursing program. I found this to be a complete rip off. I took their pre-college algebra and 2 other classes and passed the math with a 98% received a 4.0. The general education courses I am taking are exactly the same as the general education courses for the nursing program but because of my math I don't even qualify for the Teas test. How is that possible if any person off the street can come in and take the Teas test fail and take it again but a student enrolled in the school isn't qualified. I am floored needless to say and I feel extremely lost. I don't know what to do now. I feel like dropping and moving into another school. I have been studying for the test for a couple of weeks now it's all I have been thinking about is getting into nursing. Does anyone have any advice on a different route to take? Any help and information would be appreciated.

it may not make sense to us, but to them, they get to collect your tuition twice.....i would go to the office and talk to someone else, face to face....good luck

I don't think that is correct. I would look into another community college and talk with their advisors. Taking a class or two for math shouldn't mean you have to complete a whole other degree first. Sounds fishy to me! Don't get discouraged. Best of Luck!

I have been fighting with this lady for 3 days and she just continues to say the same thing. I believe that maybe that is the policy for that school but I know if I walked into another college with a nursing program I am sure I could test with them. I think it's really fishy and greedy to expect someone to do that. If all the general education classes are the same and I'm passing those with A's I should be able to test after those are done regardless!!! That's how I feel about it.

They are a "for profit" school -- trying to make as much profit from you as they can.

That explains it.

If you are not happy with the "product" they are "selling" you ... go to another school.

She is saying this to maximize the school's profit.

Also, she knows she can get away with it because:

1.) You have taken classes already.

2.) You threaten to quit their school and go to your local CC.

3.) You sit down with the advisor of your local CC only to find out NOTHING you got so far counts! NOTHING transfers! You will have to take it all again!

4.) You go back to the current college and she smirks at you. She knew that she held all the cards and that you would come back.

This is the main reason a lot of us discourage folks from attending these for profit schools.

Today I called WCTC a community college here in Waukesha and spoke to someone. I am going in tomorrow to talk to the nursing director about their nursing program. Sounds WAY better already to me. I may just drop and attend WCTC besides that I believe they have a 96% passing rate. At least I have hope again.
