hi everyone i have been following allnurses since beginning my nursing school journey but this is the first time i've ever posted. i'm in need of some advice. i'm a new grad ADN who recently received a job offer in mass with kindred healthcare. I have been reading alot of reviews online and it seems as if no one really has anything good to say..I had a bad feeling about the place and they seemed very eager to give me a job. They were very vague with responses with many of the questions I asked and didn't really seemed to want to give me a direct answer. They said 3 RN's for 40 patients on a subacute unit. when i asked about CNA's they said "it depends". The pay they said was 24/hr which i thought was low? i really need experience but this just doesn't seem right...any advice would be appreciated.

$24/hr is low-ish when you compare to the inner city Boston Hospitals (with new grad rates around $27-$30/hr depending on if the hospital is union or not) but you also are probably likely not paying to park and that is quite expensive at the big Boston hospitals. I have no first hand experience with Kindred but think there are probably pros and cons to it. It would be good experience and you would learn a lot though...

Hi,
I realize this is well over a month old, wondering if you took the position or not? The pay, depending where you live, is Ok as long as they offer differentials for my shift, which included EVERY weekend I made $26/hr. I worked for a Kindred TCU and we had about 24 patients on each of the two wings, so one RN or LNP to a wing and one desk RN, usually. Weekends didn't always have the desk RN. I worked 2nd shift. 1st shift you also had the nurse manager for that floor. First and second shift there were supposed to be 4 CNA's, but that rarely happened and the 4 units would fight back and forth for CNA's, 3rd shift was 2 nurses and 2 CNA's. There were more LPN's than RN's and as a new grad I found the majority of the nurses to be unwelcoming, I didn't mind helping anyone-CNA's included-but it was pulling teeth to get help and as a new grad I needed it! I spent 6 months there on the sub-acute to get some experience but ultimately the toxic work environment, under staffing, flat out MEAN nurses and no help from management drove me out. That plus if you missed a weekend shift you had to make it up on the next weekend. I missed a shift at the end of November (car died on the way to work) and my make up day was set for 12/25. Mind you we had to work 1-2 holidays depending on your hours and I was originally given Christmas eve and my schedule rearranged Christmas week to give the senior nurses Christmastime off, I understand that but they scheduled me to work 12/21, 12/22. 12/23, 12/24, 12/25. 12/26 & 12/27 even though I was only a 24 hour per week employee. When I gave my notice my last day was 12/20 because there was no way I was working all those days, in a hostile work place during the holidays with kids at home. Would not recommend Kindred to anyone.
I am sure there are some people who have had positive experiences with Kindred, sadly I was not one. Hope you found something decent!
