Kidney floor for clinacles

On a renal floor, I am guessing you will be dealing with a lot of patients with chronic renal failure who are on hemodialysis that are in the hospital for one reason or another (an infection, electrolyte imbalance, etc...). This population will probably have numerous comorbidities such as diabetes, HTN, CAD, etc....It should be a good learning experience for you because they will have lots of meds, interesting conditions to look up, nutritional teaching, and depending on the unit, they may do dialysis on the unit.

You shouldn't be performing any procedures that you haven't been taught in class. If a nurse tries to talk to you into doing something you have not been ok'd to do, talk to your clinical instructor right away. Some of those nurses try to convince you it's ok, then you end up being the one in trouble.

FYI: ESRD means 'end stage renal disease' I had no idea when I first saw it and finally had to ask my instructor.

We're getting into renal patients now too, and I'm finding it very interesting. We're spending the day at a local dialysis center next week and I'm really looking forward to it (my husband finds this a little bizarre - LOL!) I'm amazed at the damage that diseases like hypertension and diabetes does to the kidneys and the intense medical management that is needed to manage it. I'm finding the whole topic to be very educational and challenging. Good luck with your experience!

If you live to a ripe old age, the kidneys usually go first. It is downhill after that. They are delicate.

The ONE didn't make them to last 80 years , but HE gave us two, thank goodness.
