Kennesaw State FNP program

Published

Hello to all,

I'm in the process of completing my BSN this spring and really want to jump right in and begin a MSN program with a concentration on FNP. One program that has really caught my eye is Kennesaw State's FNP program. The program seems ideal and I love the fact that it is offered every other weekend. My concern is, I hear it is a very completive program (they only take 25 students).

I would love to speak to former or current students to ask how you prepared for the application/selection process? Is the program doable with working full time? Did you have a good experience and feel the program adequately prepared you for practicing as a FNP? Thanks in advance to all who reply.

i think their program requires work experience before application.

The PP is correct. Kennesaw requires 3 years of full time RN experience completed within the last 5 years. I've spoken to many NPs who believe an NP program should have a minimum of 2 years experience because of the nature of the experience and learning involved. It wasn't what I wanted to hear either, but I've heard it from enough NPs I'm inclined to believe it's the truth. GL

I am currently enrolled in the KSU-FNP program, and expect to graduate this December, 2012. The application process really wasn't bad. I recommend your letter of intent be concise, intelligent, and honest. Otherwise, the only preparation you'll need is what you have already done... Your transcripts with the required GPA, a good GRE score, etc. The minimum experience required in practice as a RN is 3 years.

The program is definitely manageable with a full-time job, if your employer is flexible and/or you can find clinical sites that allow you get be there on the weekend you're not at school. I know several previous graduate who worked 40 or more hours/week throughout the program.

As far as how competitive admission is, it's pretty tough. I can't remember how many applications they told us "met minimum requirements," but I do know that they only admitted 25 in my current class.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck!

Has anyone on this post completed the KSU FNP Program? I'm curious to find out if you felt prepared to take the certification exam and get a job as a NP. I can't find stats online regarding pass/fail rates nor via the board of nursing.
