Kelowna BC, Canadian guy looking to come back.

Published

Hi,

I am living overseas in Tasmania, Aus. I have been here for 3 yrs of which I have been an ECA for 2 1/2 of.

I am currently doing my EN ( equivalent to LPN) but find that I may have to return before I can complete the course, nonetheless I was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction as per job openings in the Kelowna area in Aged care.

Any info is always appreciated.

Regards

Milenko

i work in kelowna as an rn. interior health is one of the biggest employers in the region (hospitals, nursing homes, home care). i just had a quick look at the website link edited out; advertising the best thing is you can apply on line :)

one of the private nursing agencies is also hiring edited: advertising but those agencies usually pay very little :angryfire

are you aware the cost of living in kelowna has gone through the roof? rental housing is limited and expensive. anyway good luck, hope you can finish your lpn, plenty of jobs for those as well.

marijke

Sorry that I had to edit out the links in the above post. Our board had a very strict NO ADVERTISING rule. If we permited it for one poster, soon we would be snowed under with nurse recruiters!

You may PM each other with contact information if you wish, however! :)

Good luck in the job search!

It would be advertising if I worked for that agency, however to bypass the silly rules, send me an e-mail Millenko and I will send you the info that way. I guess the biggest thing is allnurses only wants to see its own advertising which there is plenty of. I just tried to help.

Hi Milenko,

I realize its been awhile since you posted....but just joined today and read your message.

There is lots of work for LPNs in Kelowna amd surrounding area. Like your previous replyer says, Interior Health rules all around here, so you have to go to their website and check out the job listings online, create a profile and post your resume there. Also lots of work for care aides while you finish your LPN.

Unions also rule here in BC and wages are around $21 for LPNs, 16-19 for care aides in facilities.

Nula, I work for VIHA as an RCA/LPN and as an RCA our wage is in the $19 range, not $16. I am not sure what union has an RCA wage of $16, but HEU doesn't. (Not that we have a contract anyway, but that's another political story) I am glad to know that LPN's are needed in the interior, as they sure aren't here on Central Vancouver Island. Most LPN's work as aids here, taking temp positions or sick calls as LPN's whenever possible. As per all my previous posts, 15 yrs and still not able to get full time LPN position (Except straight nights.)

Hi barbiedee.

I actually live east and south of kelowna, between Osoyoos and Grand

Forks. And yes, it appears that all jobs out here (too) are casual or part-time. Apparently that is the IHA way. After a while you may get regular part-time....

I was inquiring about doing local home-care (HSW) work and was told that there are actually 3 unions....one for HSW in the community which pays somewhere around 15-16hr. Lpns in the community also make less than HEU scale...not sure what it is out here, but Vancouver community paid only 18.05 to start. Then, in the facilities, its more..(21something).....HEU for the care homes and hosp. Sorry don't remember what the unions are....

odd though eh?....how do they get away with that?

When I worked in Vancouver, in the downtown clinics LPNs were (still are) part of cupe....and they reclassed us as "practical nursing care workers" and rolled back wages to 18.05 (for several hundred hours) top in that job is 21something...consequently, they have a hard time keeping LPNs there....may find some full time there!

Sounds like IHA and VIHA operate the same. (lousy) A few years ago we HEU LPN's received a large wage increase to match the BCGEU LPN wage, but even with the HEU wage roll back for LPN's two years ago, it sounds like we're still ahead now. That would be fine if only there were JOBS for LPN's! When I graduated in 1990 there were LPN jobs for the taking, you could literally walk in off the street and get an LPN job. Those were the days.:uhoh3:
