How many of you would like to say this.........
I'm very sorry your not happy with your partners care, however your more than welcome to take them home or to another care facility if you desire. I work in aged care and love it, that being said I really dont think that the general public have a bloody clue as to how underpaid nursing and care staff are compared to how much hard work we put in plus all the BS to go along with it. Now granted I have only been a nurse for approx 3 yrs and i have grown so much in that time but my patience on the other hand has grown very thin. I know it sounds mean but tell me why is it that when someone is unwell we as nurses spend more time looking after the relatives emotionally when our focus is to be directed towards the patient. I think that for every person that complains about every little nit picky thing that there should be a program that automatically enrolls them into a 1 day full on session and actually do an 8 hr shift where thay have to change dirty pads, and wipe bottoms as well as try to undress people who dont want to have a shower and will resist you at every turn. maybe they should try to feed someone who wont open their mouth and then also try to get them to drink 4-5 cups of fluid a day.... the list goes on and i have to say i have had enough of the guilt ridden baby boomers who think they know it all. walk a mile in any one of my care staff's shoes and then tell me how easy it is to look after 30+ elderly demented time consuming patients plus all the paperwork that needs to be done and then tell me how easy it is. Or how about they be somewhat thankful that they dont have to do this at home, or that they are somewhere being verbally and or physically abused. LOL anyone else want to add their 2 bobs.

Do people really need a bloody mobile at work?
This woman is a woman who is in her late 50's and she is very opinionated, always has to put her 2 bobs into everything. It was a pleasure to be able to catch her out, I managed a call centre for 14 yrs and if there was one thing I learned very quick was that I needed to set an example and follow through with what I said I would do. We have a culture here in Australia where the care staff seem to think that they have more rights than responsibilities and they will call the union in over everything. So we as nurses have to be very careful how we speak to the care staff but then again they get away with being dis-respectful to nurse's, other staff, residents and even family. I love where I work but I'll tell ya what when certain staff are on you know it, LOL but as of late they also know when i am on cuz I am on em all day to stop holding up the walls , to do their documentation etc. the other day it was about 11:50 am and they still had 5 patients to wash and dress, they had been slacking through the morning. Normally if I am free which I was that morning I'll roll up my sleeves and get on the floor and help but I thought if they have time to hold up the walls then they obviously dont need my help. One of them did come to me and ask if i could help em out and when I refused and told her why the look I got was very nasty. We de-briefed later in the shift and it turns out alot of the other staff felt the same way as I did. Tough love I guess. hopefully they will learn.

Do people really need a bloody mobile at work?
Wow, glad to see that other's feel the same way. I have been working since i was about 14 yrs old and one thing I learned very early on was that when I went to work it was to "work" In our facility one mistake our DON made was allow staff some exceptions to the rule. Dont get me wrong i am not disrespecting the management but apparently some staff have pleaded their case's as in they need to have their mobile on their person in case the kids need to reach them, my reasoning still doesn't change in that if it's an actual emergency by all means I will come and get you off the floor. But if it's the kids ringing to ask how to change the channel, or to ask permission to have a cookie.... I rest my case, I will field the calls and if it's no an emergency then I'll take a message and you can ring back on your break. thanks everyone, i now have a few other ideas on how to battle this ongoing problem.

Do people really need a bloody mobile at work?
Okay So I have been an Enrolled nurse for 3 yrs now and I work only in aged care. I personally don't have a cell phone because at the end of the day I'm either at work or at home so people always know where to reach me and if i for some reason don't answer the phone it means that I am taking a time out for me !!! Now I am only 36 so I cant really say that I am old fashioned but in the place I work I knocked on a residents door that was closed, I knew 2 staff were in the room as they had informed me that there was something they wanted me to observe. So like I said I knocked and entered the room to find them giving this resident a bed wash whilst one of the girls was on her mobile phone talking. I quickly asked her to leave the room, I assisted with helping the other girl finish the bed wash and then asked the other girl to come around to my office. I basically gave her the option to either put her phone away and reminded her that she wasn't supposed to have it on her person anyway. She tried to justify this which I stopped her asap and basically said either put your phone away or go home for the rest of the day. She chose to go home and was very ****** off at me, some of the other staff were shocked at my decision but I thought that it is utter bull *****. If there is a need for a family member to get in contact with us while at work i always thought that people would ring the front office and then either a message would be taken and if it is really urgent then that person could be taken off the floor and take the call in private. Is that un-reasonable. It's getting out of hand and I hope that most places begin to clamp down on it. So much for direct 1 on 1 patient care.

Workplace bullies & weak management
must be nice, because our DON seems really avoid conflict and we have alot of really good eca's but alot of them wont work when the Older more experienced staff are on because of the bullying and harassment. Seriously whenever some of the staff get rung for an extra shift the first question they ask is who am I working with, and their answer pends on who their offsider is for the day. pathetic isn't it but management is to afraid to crack the whip.

Workplace bullies & weak management
unfortunately alot of the staff have been around for years and all they have to do is mention the word "union" and management puts their tails between their legs and tries to smooth things over. I have since found out that this woman has been bagging me out and bragging to other staff about how She was the one to tell me off, somehow I think she probably forgot to mention to the same people that she totally disrespected the patient and left her naked. The same resident passed away this morning while I was on shift, and normally I don't wish evil things on people but I hope the ECA in question feels like absolute crap when she hears about it. I also feel like confronting her in front of the staff she was bagging me out to and asking her if she told them how she left a palliative patient naked as she walked out on her to have a tanty. Arrrgh I am so angry about this that I am almost in tears again, can any of you experienced nurse's give me some advice how to deal with this ECA???? I will say that it was very nice to hear the patients daughter tell me that she was glad that her mother passed away on my shift.

Workplace bullies & weak management
Okay so I work in aged care and to make a long story short we have alot of ECA's who think that their opinions are "the be all end all" you know the type I am talking about... They feel that they can talk to anyone including the DON anyway they want but the moment someone dishes it back to them they have a tanty and threaten to walk out on the job. Then management coddles them and basically begs them to stay. *** Today I had the distinct pleasure of working with the said loudmouth. She has been nipping at my ass for awhile now and trying to get me to bite, so this morning her and her offsider were giving a palliative resident a bedwash. I knocked and poked my head in to quickly tell them something and she pipes up and says " Oh while your here you can change so an so's illieostomy (might I add this is a job that the eca's feel is beneath them) So straight away I replied and said " No not at the moment but you can do it as part of her care, besides you do everything else around here" ( whoops ) Well up come the hands and the tanty starts " thats it I dont need to be spoken to like this, thats it I'm going home and with that she walked out leaving this poor woman naked on the bed and her offsider alone. normally this girl and I get on okay and I always play by the rules that I never ask my eca's to do something I wouldnt do first so it isnt like I dont perform this task or avoid it altogether like most RN's in our place do. She did come back after 5 minutes, So I said to her Um I thought you were going home ( no reply) So in turn I thought hang on this isnt good enough and proceeded to tell her that if she is going to threaten to go home then by all means do it because I didnt need her services if her attitude was like that and that it wasnt to late for her to still do home, I'll also add that this ECA is also persuing her RN training. I know that the management in our facility will try to smooth it over but now that I have had time to think about it she really did cross a few boundries here. So can anyone help me pinpoint some good points to bring up to her so that can possibly recognize that what she did was un-professionial and wrong. I will admit that my comment probably wasnt the best thing to say either but I do think she reacted in an overboard manner and if she is going to become an RN she really needs to behave with more decorum. Please feel free to comment and feel free to give me some tips on how best to manage these workplace bullies because my mission to eliminate them one by one.

Help with selection criteria?
Hello, Recent graduare of Enrolled nursing here. I was looking at re-doing my resume and wanted to include addressing some selection criteria, this has not proved to be as easy as I thought. I have a few ideas but I have a hit a road block and could use some guidance and even some help as to how to make it specific to what I do now. I work primarily in aged care but want to make the transition to a hospital environment as I can use more and gain more knowledge. The selection criteria I am looking to address are..... 1) Knowledge of the principles of nursing care, procedures and practices. 2) Documentation and date collection skills. 3) Communication and interpersonal skills. 4) Ability to assist clients to meet their needs, overcome health problems and to perform activities of daily living. Like I said I have a few ideas already but really have trouble putting it into words. Hope you guys can all contribute and thanks in advance for any help. Milenko 5) Clinical skills commensurate with education and skill preparation.

Proper handover
Hi, I have recently graduated and am now an Medication endorsed Enrolled nurse, ( same as an LPN in Canada or America ) I work night shift and in my new role have the responsibility or giving handover in the morning and of course giving medications at night as required. I was wondering if I could get some opinions as to what you experienced hands would expect or even consider a proper handover? In my mind I want to keep it as factual as possible and of course as time effective as possible. I work in aged care so it doesnt get to exciting but yet I want to make sure I cover my bases. As well I think there is more I should be doing on night shift, it is a new place so I know in time I will get to know the residents but what are some of the things you would do to make it easier for the next shift nurse? Thanks for reading Milenko ( Or as the oldies call me Mr.Sister LOL )

Enrolled Nurse who needs help with resume?
Thank you everyone for your time and kind replies, I have taken it all on board and will apply it. I used to manage an office and I agree the whole esthetics look and long resumes full of puffery were the first ones to be over looked when I hired people. I always looked at the resumes that were to the point. Thanks again, fingers crossed as I have a few offers on the table already. Milenko

Ghostbusters lyrics re-make can you help?
Hello, Enrolled nursing student here, in just over 1 month I will have a completed the 2 yr course and finally but it all to use. However we have one final presentation that we are to give to the class and my group has chosen Constipation. So we wanted to have some fun and re-vamp the ghostbuster lyrics as we are going to be dubbed the Bowelbusters. Sooooooooo in the spirit of fun and jest I was wondering if some of may want to help us change the song to reflect what is is like to have constipation. Here are the origional lyrics: Ghostbusters! If there's something strange in your neighborhood Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! If there's something weird and it don't look good Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! I ain't afraid of no ghost I ain't afraid of no ghost If you're seeing things running through your head Who can you call? Ghostbusters! An invisible man sleeping in your bed Oh, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! I ain't afraid of no ghost I ain't afraid of no ghost Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! If you're all alone, pick up the phone And call Ghostbusters! I ain't afraid of no ghost I hear it likes the girls I ain't afraid of no ghost Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! If you've had a dose of a freaky ghost You'd better call Ghostbusters! Let me tell you something Bustin' makes me feel good I ain't afraid of no ghost I ain't afraid of no ghost Don't get caught alone, oh no Ghostbusters! When it comes through your door Unless you just want some more I think you better call Ghostbusters! Ow! Who you gonna call Ghostbusters! Thanks for your input
