Keep it to myself? / UMDNJ?

Published

Wondering if anyone can comment on how to approach the subject of my educational goals as a CRNA when interviewing for an ICU position as a new BSN grad? Do I mention it and therefore let them know I will be leaving in two years or do I keep things to myself?

Also, anyone had any experiences with the UMDNJ program?

Thanks!

Clinical at UMDNJ starts very early in the program - I believe in the first semester; That said, the process of getting a nursing license in NJ via reciprocity - can take an excruciating amount of time. My anesthesia director, who's original license was from NY, stated that it took 8 months to get a license in NJ! Imagine starting the program at UMDNJ and not being able to begin clinicals with the rest of your class because you didn't have a nursing license...

woopsie - i think it was 8 weeks - but regardless, still a long time

During my job interviews after graduation, I was honest with each of the ICU managers I interviewed with when they asked about my future career/educational plans. I took the job where the manager was supportive of my future plans even though she knew I might only be on her unit for one or two years. The hospital unit I accepted the job with has a good reputation of helping people get into grad school and give them good work experiences while they are on the unit. Another unit I interviewed in, the manager seemed very discouraging about my future plans during the interview...so of course I wouldn't take a job there since most schools want a letter of recommendation from your supervisor and I don't think she would want to write a supportive letter when she doesn't want people to ever leave her unit.

BTW, I just applied to UMDNJ and they want me to get NJ RN license first! At first, they told me it would be OK to apply, just type a letter about reciprocity license in case I get in. Now they cannot process my application without a license...

Did anybody have any experience applying from out of state?

Hi Zoozoo,

I was wondering if you got into UMDNJ? I am applying for Fall 2007. If you already had your interview can you please give me some advice? Also,I did not have any problems with not having my NJ license. I was told that it will be needed upon admission to the program.

Thank you so much in advance,

:wink2:

I wouldn't say a word and definitely would not mention it to other coworkers until you have been there a year or two.

hard to say, guess it really depends on the manager and what his/her staffing looks like at that moment. i was upfront and told them of my plans, also that it wasn't happening any time soon as i still had sciences to take and such. we've had 4 nurses including myself leave in the year that i've worked there to go to crna school. and i just heard this past week that my manager did not hire a nurse solely on the fact that her plan was to go to crna school.
