Kaplan Test Question

I am taking the NCLEX on Wednesday so I have been studying several different books etc. But I have understood from all of the them that the patient comes first (that was also one of the first things taught to us in Nursing School), right? Well, I just came across a question that states an obese client needs to use the bathroom and it is urgent. The facility normally uses a pully (sp?) to move the patient (saves the nurses backs) but the pully contraption takes a few minutes to put together. So do you grab an NA (cause in NCLEX world they are supposed to be plentiful) and move the client onto the bedpan or do you make the client wait until you can get the contraption together to move him? Kaplan says make the client wait, I am thinking the patient shouldnt have to wait when all you need to do is roll him over and (according to NCLEX world) the NA is available.

What do you think?

My guess is, a pulley is used in cases where it is absolutely impossible to move a patient, even with multiple assists, without injuring the health care workers.

In other words, if the nurse and NA moved the patient without the pulley they could have seriously injured their backs. The worst that could happen by following the recommendation, of using the pulley, would be for the patient to have an accident. Although this would be embarrassing for the patient, it would be better than screwing up a back.

Just my guess. I know questions like this can make you go crazy!

Funny story: my parents met through moving a morbidly obese patient. My mom was a nursing student and my dad was a security guard at the hospital and my mom asked for him to assist. The rest is history. :)

Yes, I am sure you are right. I just hope that when I start working I can work in the NCLEX world, seems like everything is readily available at all times. haha!

I do feel like I am about to go crazy trying to get prepared for the NCLEX. I dont know that I am prepared for Wednesday but I have to get it over with soon - my nerves are shot! (S/Sx evident of possible anxiety disorder)

BTW, Awesome story about your parents!

NCLEX should open their own hospital and hire all new grads. :)

Try not to go too crazy and don't let one question shake your confidence (easier said than done).

You will pass on Wednesday. Don't even entertain the possibility that you won't (hope I don't sound bossy). :)

I should add, my parents did not use a pulley.

HAHA!!! Thats a great idea!

Thank you very much for the words of encouragement. I needed to hear that.

Have you taken the NCLEX yet? Or are you going to take it soon?

You are very welcome. Positive thinking can do wonders. :)

I'm taking it on the 17th of Feb. I'm doing Kaplan these next two weeks. Two and a half weeks after that to go through the Q-bank and then the NCLEX.

I would go with the pulley being necessary to prevent injury to all concerned.
