Kaplan or National University

Published

Hi everyone!

Im having a hard time deciding which school to go to...Can anyone give me some info on either or both schools? Please help!!!!!!

Specializes in NICU.

I don't have any experience with either school, but it's my understanding that Kaplan is not an accredited program. This may be a problem if you ever want or need to work outside of California or if you want to go on for a higher degree. Just something to consider!

Kaplan IS accredited. They take the same Nclex test as everyone else. They do not have WASC accredidation, which means if you want to move on the higher programs, like and LVN wanting an RN bridge, or an RN from Kaplan wanting a BSN then this is where you may run into problems. But it's not like they don't give you any credit..for example..if your an LVN graduate from Kaplan and you want to go to Mira Costa in Vista and take the RN bridge program, I believe you need to take 3 or 4 classes from Mira Costa and then you can apply for the bridge. So it's not like they won't take you at all, but to meet thier standards you would need to complete a few classes there which you could do part time if you were working as an LVN.

I had the same dilemma. I did my CNA at Kaplan so I was initially leaning towards them. I have decided to go with National after much deliberation. Kaplan offers an ADN for about 55K, National offers a BSN for $45K. Kaplan's program is 24 months and National's is 22 months. The one drawback for me with NU is that I have to take all my pre-reqs before I can apply and they require more than Kaplan. Kaplan requires you to have worked in the medical industry with at least a CNA for 6 months. Kaplan includes 8 pre-req type classes in their ADN program but you can get credit for them if you've already taken them elsewhere (it will also save you about $1k per class too). Both programs are very time consuming as they are both considered accelerated programs so they prefer that you don't work while in the program. Ultimately I wanted to get my BSN so that was part of my consideration for going with NU instead.

I am not sure where you are but I am in the San Diego area and I have contact info for really good academic counselors at both schools if you would like it. :)

Hope this helps and good luck! :D

I go to National University, I'll graduate May 2011. I think it's a good program. As somebody pointed out, Kaplan is not fully accredited so if you want to further your schooling, you may have to take some classes over. Plus, they're similar in price and NU is fully accredited and a BSN. Just my 2 cents, good luck whatever you decide.
