Kaplan harder than NCLEX-RN, Passed with 75Q & Low Kaplan Scores

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Let me start off by saying that I don't know whether I recommend Kaplan or not for NCLEX review. I am on the fence because I took Kaplan, used all Q bank questions and Q trainers (and reviewed all questions from both twice); and I passed NCLEX-RN on the first try. I will give you a little background about me: I am an LPN and have been for 7 years, but am also severely out of practice, I was a C student in school and thought I would fail every semester (I failed none). In addition to Kaplan I did a little of Saunders, and I mean VERY little. I studied solidly for about 3 weeks with anywhere from 50-265 questions daily. I graduated Dec 2010, took Kaplan (in class) at the end of January, and took NCLEX-RN at the end of March.

My Kaplan scores for Qbank and Qtrainers ranged from 48%-70% (mostly in the 50's). When I sat for NCLEX I found the questions WAY easier than a lot of Kaplans thought-provoking questions. I got about 3 drag and drop, 8 or 9 SATA, infection control, a lot of priority (who would you see first) and a few pharmacology. The NCLEX SATA's were nowhere NEAR as difficult as Kaplans. The computer cut off at 75, and I was singing hallelujah because I felt very confident in my performance.

The reason why I felt confident, tho, was not because of the fact that I did thousands of Kaplan questions. I was confident because I prayed and truly believe that I took Jesus into that testing center with me. Prayer was the key for me, God is so good! I honestly feel that NCLEX is not a test that you can prepare for by doing content reviews or tons of questions. I mean honestly, you cant study everything, yet NCLEX CAN test you on ANYTHING. I spoke with a friend of mine a few days before my test and she said "Girl, put away those books now! None of that stuff will be on NCLEX!"...and she was right...I didn't see one question that was even similar! BUT...........every test is different and Kaplan may just help you, and maybe it helped me too (if very little)...BOTTOM LINE: If it is in God's will, YOU WILL BE AN RN! Also PVT works! Tried it about 45 minutes after the test and got the "good pop-up". I would also like to say that this site is a GREAT resource for both information and emotional support! Good luck future RN's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah:

i think if you continue to maintain and get higher score on such test, that would be great...and,oh,dont forget to review and study more on your weak points it really helps..wat im juz doin ryt now is digging all my stuff in kaplan books and saunders...hop it'll gonna help me,cause looking at my score at qbank i feel so awful...i think im so stupid dat ill gonna take da exam dis aug 8 and having a low score made fell soooo baddd...hop its not gona be the same in my actual exam though........ill keep on praying to us guys hop we can make it...!!!!.....

I am glad I came across this discussion b/c I was starting to doubt myself about being ready to take the NCLEX this Sat. (Aug 9). I to went to the Kaplan review but it was in May and I just now received my ATT. Anyways, I am going through the test bank on Kaplan and they seem to get harder and my scores range from 55-70% with one 45%. So yea a huge blow to my confidence! But reading everyones reply makes me feel so much better! So I will keep trucking along and leave it all in God's hands this Saturday. Thanks everyone for your encouraging words on this discussion!

Yes most definately, thanks to all of u... Such words of inspiration is sometimes all one needs. I too feel more confident with my fluctating scores. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US FUTURE RN'S!!!!!! :redpinkhe

Hello Everyone,

I have been doing Kaplan qbank questions for about 2 weeks now and the hurst review too. I feel that hurst is helping me relearn the content, and kaplan is helping me answer questions too. Also, I have been getting scores from 54-68%.But, it seems I am having trouble on answering who would you see first questions... I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on how to sucessfully answer priority questions. I always seem to narrow down to two answers that directly go with abc's so how would I answer them correctly? Could someone maybe give me a scenrio with answers and some rationales on a type of priority question and maybe that could help me :)

Thanks for all of your help!

I love allnurses.com

God Bless!

hi there jewel,..ill share some what i know and hope it'll help u sumhow...in who do u see first question..(this was actually from kaplan)...u have to find stable vs unstable, acute vs chronic(see acute first),ABCs,real vs potential, expected vs unexpected outcome...and for the priority question juz stick on their decision tree it does really helps..and hopfully i may use it carefully on my exam day..GODBLESS U..:)

:yeah:I passed NCLEX-RN on the first try w 75Q.I did KAPLAN was really helpful. used all Q bank questions and Q trainers and read the rational over and over.Thank you Lord.:yeah::heartbeat

congrats nica28!:yeah: I just do self study using saunders book.. i took my NCLEX RN exam last saturday and i did all 265Q i tried the PVT after my exam for about an hour and it let me go to cc page:crying2:..... it was a horrible experience.. i went through stages of grieving and im glad i do recover fast.. my family needs me so i need to be strong and try to exam again. Im planning to take kaplan online course.. i heard alot of good stuff about it.. but its so expensive and i cant afford it.. im just working a part time job thats y i didnt take any review course bec of my financial status.. hope someone can share their online account with me and that will be appreciated.. :heartbeat

Don't let the price of kaplan be a deterrent! I passed my first time with 127 questions, & I honestly do not know if I would have passed without completing the kaplan course.

I also just received a job offer & they will reimburse me for the fee of the course, I can't imagine that the hospital I will be working at is the only one who does this.

Nice! I hope to pass it the second time.. i cant quit my job cuz this is why i survive here in cali. Ill make a good study plan this time.. and yah ill save money to purchase kaplan online review. They said it will take a month to recieve the official result. I will use the waiting time wisely.. thanks for sharing ur experience! Good luck to ur new job!:)

This is a thread I can relate to!

2 years after graduating I decided to take the NCLEX. I studied at Kaplan Center in NYC. Never opened my books. Just the Online On Demand lectures. Finished 70 percent of my Qbank (48%)

Diagnostic -48%

QT 1 -52%

QT 2 - 38%

QT 3 - 56%

QT 4-6 -Skipped! I was Too lazy! LOL

QT 7 - 51%

Readiness - 61%

I had a non-conventional study habit. I wont study if I dont feel like studying. LOL

Took my exam yesterday, 75 Questions. PVT giving me a GOOD POP UP!

Praise Jesus!
