Hi everyone, so I just got accepted to a nursing program in Northern California and was not aware that ALL our juvenile convictions would come up and would ever have to look back at my juvenile years. I am so worried I will not pass my background check for entrance to the program. I have taken numerous background checks and nothing came up, even volunteering at the hospital. However, I did a Livescan and my adjudication came up from 11 years ago (16 at the time.) I already know that I will have to explain myself to BON, which I spoke too and said that I would have to explain myself, and see if I have committed any more crimes, which I have not since I got in trouble at 16. I am just afraid. If it helps, it is through the Los rios school district. Does anyone know what kind of background do they do in community colleges? are they more worried about crimes committed as an adult? or?

Hi I was curious how you ended up.
I had a charge (I think it was a misdemeanor) when I was 15 years old. I know I remember them saying the records were sealed back then.
I have since then- volunteered in the ER work at a hospital as a CNA and been licensed as CNA through live scan in the state of CA.
I paid for a background check through the DOJ and nothing came back but do I need to check through the state too?
Hope everything worked out for you as well! I think it’s not the school that you need to worry about it’s more about your license after the NCLEX is last.

Have you talked to a lawyer to see if they are eligible to be sealed? I’m not very familiar with that process in California.

Background checks for medical personnel will show everything including old hidden records. When you fill out the paperwork to let the school do a background check it is extremely important that you disclose everything. Not disclosing your history will get you into more trouble than disclosing it. They will look it at as a case of you being dishonest. Depending on what school you go to, where you do your clinicals, and the state laws will determine what is allowed in a background check.

Hi! Started my application process, I passed all of my background checks but I just did my Live scan and I know everything is going to show up because I have a copy of it. I am definitely worried, and I graduate in 4 days. I will keep you posted. A new law went into effect July 2020 so I hope it makes things easier. I was 16 of the time of the crime, and I’m 29 now.
