Is there any reason why no one has answered this question? Does anyone know or just don't have time to reply. I was really curious and thats why i asked.

I would suspect that the reason no one has posted is that your questions don't really affect the administration of anesthetics to the diabetic patient, which would be the perspective of the CRNA or SRNA. Therefore the answers would have to be researched by others, just like you will have to do since you are curious!

I learned much of this in physiology and endocrinology courses, but, as PP said, its not something I need to know to do my job, so the details have faded. I would have to haul out my textbooks to formulate an answer and I just don't have time. Plus, some people may not want to answer because it kind of sounds like a homework assignment. This forum is moderated and sometimes people do respond to posts, but the moderators may not approve them for quite some time.

Its so funny how everytime you ask a question in this forum you have to get some type of backlash or sarcastic answer. I also asked about tough cases that CRNA's has encountered. I am just trying to get some of you guys to talk about your clinical experiences. I guess I need to talk about salary or get a MDA vs CRNA or AA vs CRNA debate started to get some reply. Well never mind..I'll just go ask the med students at studentdoctor.net since they seem to love to discuss clinical stuff and moreso what CRNA's know or don't know. :rolleyes:

Well, if you ask a question in the proper forum you would likely be able to obtain an answer (don't get upset if you don't always get the response you wanted either.)

Also, while you did ask in the very end of your statement about tough cases that CRNAs have encountered, it was just a small snippet of your question. The overwhelming majority of your post regarded diabetes and questions that have virtually no implications in the anesthesia world.

yes, why don't you go ahead and do that. you know how much the peeps at SDN enjoy CRNAs, let alone SRNAs. be prepared to be ostracized. besides, why didn't you just look up the answers to the questions you posed? it's a great way of learning. as a previous poster has stated, it's not really in the realm of anesthesia to have to know that stuff. if you do, that's great though. however, another homework assignment is not what SRNAs need.

now as far as a tough clinical case, hmmm, i had a carotid last 5 hrs, cervical plexus block wore off, local wasn't working, shunt didn't work, blood all over the place, vitals in the crapper, pt hurting.. in that clinical site, carotids are done awake, so the pt was definitely getting his money's worth. the case was not so much physically challenging, but to see what i saw, was just plain awful. murphy's law for sure.

I was just wondering if CRNA's were educated to answer certain questions. I was reading a thread recently regarding the education of CRNAs and I was quite upset with the way physicians thought that all nurses were uneducated as well as CRNA's.
So I was just wondering if some CRNA's may know the answers to these questions that I have taken from that message board.
Everything is related to Diabetes
1. Why cataracts develop at a faster rate than in non-diabetics?
2. What are the sorbitol pathway in the lens?
3. What is the fructose pathway in the liver?
4. What are the beta receptors in adipose tissue, and why does insulin actually causes weight gain?
5. What is the pathophysiology of neuropathic pain, and why are diabetics particularly prone to it?
Futhermore, I was wondering from both CRNA's and SRNA's what were you toughest cases that you have encountered and why? Just trying to read about you guys clinical experiences...thats all.... Thanks

We're nurses, not physicians. They don't teach that stuff in nursing school or CRNA school.

I'm sure most, if not all CRNAs are quite busy in their respective practices.

We all are educated to conduct research to find the answers even if we are not experts in the field of endocrinology.
