I am a nursing studnet and lately I have had this craving to eat baking soda just a little about a tablespoon in one day and I just wanted to know is this a safe habit?

No, you could give yourself metabolic alkalosis. If you don't know what that is go ask your MD, and mention your craving while you are at it.
Actually a teaspoon of anything, even dirt is unlikely to harm you, but don't start down that road. Before you know it you'll be eating whole boxes of soda and who knows where it will end.

This craving to eat nonfood substances is called pica. Some researchers say that it stems from a nutritional deficiency, (esp. iron deficiency) your body's way of telling you that it needs something. These substances are usually dirt, clay, chalk, ice, and STARCH! We learned about it in OB, as pregnant women have been known to suffer from it. (One of our classmates admitted that she actually ate dirt while pregnant!) Had a check-up lately?
Hi Janine, I know I could not be pregnant, becuase I have sex only one time nad it was back in 1999, so that is not a possibility, I just like the taste of the salty baking soda.

mcgO2- I didn't mean to make it sound like only pregnant women have these cravings, anyone can get them-it just may mean that you're lacking some nutrient in your diet. However, I guess it's possible too, to just like the taste! Either way, I would definitely mention it to a doctor to see how safe it is. Good luck!
