Just took HESI A2

Nursing Students HESI

Just thought I should give back some contribution to the site as I have been searching and questioning a lot on this site. I just took the test as a requirement for UTHSC BSN program. I did not have to take Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. I will be glad to answer questions regarding the test.

Hi!

I took the HESI A2 yesterday at a prometrics center. I was given 2 laminated papers (front and back) along with a fine pointed sharpie to use as "scratch paper". The only downside was that what ever markings I made on the laminated papers was permanent, but I was told to ask someone if I needed more paper. Two laminated papers front and back were enough for me, I really only used them for the math section of the test. There IS a calculator!!!! The calculator is located inside of the sections of the Hesi and it is in the obvious. You can't miss it, so no worries!!

Also, there is a timer on the test that lets you know how much time you have left--I remember I could not find information on this and was trying to find a watch at home to take with me.

There were 55 questions on the Math, Reading, Vocab and Grammar portions of my test. A&P and Critical thinking had 30 questions each.

What was the name of the hesi exam that you took? I know there is several the first one that I saw said admissions assesment with critical thinking, and the other one was Rn admissions assesment with critical thinking 1. I am trying to take it as well at a prometrics center, but there is different tests for which you can be scheduled for so that has kept from taking it. Any inforamtion would be greatly appreciated.

I took the admission assessment with critical thinking. I signed up through UT-Houston HSC ( https://nursing.uth.edu/dotAsset/2368423.pdf ) by using their school ID you know for sure you are taking the correct version of the Hesi that is required for them. Also, if the school you are applying to has a link like UT-Houston's I would highly recommend you sign up for the Hesi through that.

Hey cr3amino,

Thanks for replying to my question. I have already checked the link that you have provided and did find out they offer there id, but my only worry is that I won't be taking this test in Houston since it is like 6 hours away from where I live. I have found a prometrics center near where I live and that is where I am going to take it.

By any chance do you know if this is the same exam that you registered for?

Yes, that was the same exam I took! Also, on the actual exam page I noticed that at the top it said UTHSC-BSN program, so you can be double sure it's the right one!

I'm going to take this test in 2weeks! I'd there anything you can tell me about the a&p part as well as the grammar and vocabulary sections? I'm very nervous for these 3 sections. What did u study for theses sections and did they help? Do you remember any specific questions they asked? Please help!

I'm glad to help, however I cannot tell you specific questions that were asked on the test. I will tell you what I used to study and areas to look into.

For the A&P part I suggest using quizlet (searching Hesi A2 and use the A&P flash cards on there). I did the self-test format and it helped a lot. The Hesi A2 study guide is a great tool for an outline of what you need to know for A&P. Start from the very top of the body and work your way down looking over the systems, organs, hormones, muscles, bones and their function. The A&P questions on the hesi tested you on information on all parts of the body. Make your own study sheet (write-it-out!) and have someone quiz you, that helped me out a lot.

I also used this website ( https://sites.google.com/site/apinnerworkings/free-stuff/hesi-a2 ) there is a really good outline for A&P if you scroll to the bottom it is one of the downloads. I would also suggest looking through older posts on allnurses, you can find some valuable information that was provided from others on what to study for the A&P portion of the Hesi.

The grammar section was not too bad, I found it easier than the practice tests. All the information you need about the grammar section is located in the Hesi A2 study guide (I used the 3rd edition). A lot of the questions could be answered by just plugging in words to the sentence and seeing what "sounded" right. I made an outline of the grammar section in the Hesi A2 study guide ( writing down things helps me remember better).

For the vocab section I looked over the words in the hesi a2 study guide, also look over words you already know because sometimes you may not know the EXACT meaning of the words. I used the Hesi A2 secrets book for addition vocab words. I don't remember seeing specific medical terminology relating to disease or illness on my test. Have a good understanding of words that are used in a medical setting like words used to describe and/or talk to patients or co-workers. I have taken a medically terminology course, but knowing latin roots did not help. I work at a retirement community and a lot of the terms were familiar to me from experience.

I studied about 3 weeks for the hesi a2 (during winter break). I would suggest taking your most challenging section FIRST. I was really worried about A&P and I focused mainly on that about 3 days before my test day. I was really nervous and worried about the test, especially the A&P part and after getting it out of the way first I was MUCH more relaxed for the other portions of the test. I took math second since I knew it would be the most time consuming, followed by reading, grammar and vocab. Remember to take your time--I spent 85minutes just on the math portion because I double checked every answer on the calculator and by hand.

Here's how I did:

Overall: 94.8

Math: 98

Reading: 96

Grammar: 92

Vocab: 92

A&P: 96

CT: 870

Hope this helps! Good luck, you'll do great :)

Wow! Thank you so much for your help! You have given me lots if study tools to use and that outline is fantastic. I also plan on taking the A&p section first. Your scores are amazing! You will surely get into UT! Good luck and hopefully I can do as good as you did!

Are the conversion in a sentence structure or just fill in the blank?

Hello there! I am about to take the Hesi next week and was wondering if you encountered any Roman Numeral questions on the math portion? Also, were there many measurement conversion word problems?

Baus0001 - I have heard from friends that you will get a calculator that will be on the test but you can't bring your own calculator.

Was there a lot of conversions in Math?

This is my first time taking the test and I'm scared. I don't know how well I will do.

Do you have any study guides, tips or study suggestions?

Currently, I'm using the HESI Evolve A2 2nd Edition book to study and I bought McGraw-Hill's Evolve A2 Practice Tests.

Were they all multiple choice questions?
